The one Thanksgiving I spent in Canada was in Nova Scotia, where the traditional meal was half Scots and half Turkey.

What are your plans?

And are you watching football?

And what's for dessert?

Football? Oh, yeah, that other sport.

We're having Thai curry. If you don't have kids or any family in town, there is no turkey in the world small enough to prevent there being too many turkey leftovers.

Turkey, turkey, turkey. Mashed potatoes, bread stuffing, roast squash, broccoli (mostly for colour, I admit). Great big salad with all the leftover garden veggies thrown in. Pumpkin pie and pecan pie for desert, with real whipped cream for both.

All that after a lovely walk in the forest, scuffling through the fallen leaves and watching the light filter in so much more warmly than it does in the summer. It was a bit too hot for traditional Thanksgiving sweaters, but the heat was appreciated by those who had to go swimming in order to bring the dock and the raft in from the lake.

Lovely day.
