From what I can tell, I don't see a problem with what you're proposing. You're giving the character room to grow, and whether or not he accepts that growth is an entirely different story.

Some people like to read novels cluttered with all sorts of despair with darker characters. (I'm one of those.) But at the same time, I don't think it would be "selling out" to lighten the load a bit.

I used to watch 24 on Fox. If you've ever seen it, then you know that Jack Bauer has some pretty bad days. I'm not watching this season (I got too fed up with all of the ridiculous plot lines), but I've read some reviews which say the critics would really like to see Jack have a day they could relate to. Calm him down, really, and just give us a glimpse of that other side to humanity he must have in there somewhere.
