It's rare that a self-published novel is picked up by trade publishers. Even rarer is to have it made into a movie. But that's what happened to Andy Weir's The Martian. You can read how in the following.

I saw the trailer for the film when I was at the movies last week, and was intrigued enough by the premise to buy the book.

I bought the book when the author was self-pubbing it for 99 cents on Amazon. Certainly the best buck I ever spent on a new book. ;) Ripping good yarn. Will see the movie. Nice to see the author getting some well-deserved success for it.

Loved teh book. Don't think I realized it was self-pubbed. That makes it even awesomer.

I roared through it. Terrific story, and I loved the MC's voice.

The book is a must-read for every [scfi] writer. It has broken so many writing rules with perhaps a little too much tedious hard scfi details that it is supposed to be impossible to sell and read. Yet it is so good and so intriguing.

This is what happens when you write a really, really rollicking good book, no matter how you publish. It's such a compelling read--science-y and yet totally accessible. And as pretty much anyone who has read it will agree, the voice is just. so. awesome.

I first read about the book in this article in Entertainment Weekly (http://www.ew.com/article/2014/11/05/andy-weir-the-martian-author) about Weir's path to best-sellerdom (well worth the read). Weir is as likable as his MC Watney.

Can't WAIT for the movie! Please, Matt Damon, don't screw this up.

Ugh, this crappy book. I hated every detailed potato growing boring page of it. :-P

What? You hated the book but read "every detailed potato growing boring page" ?!!! I'd have quit after the first page I hated and thrown the book into the recycle bin.

I had no idea that The Martian was self-published. I absolutely loved the book. Good for Andy Weir! That's terrific!
