Think about entering an elevator - the wide crack between the edge of the building floor and the edge of the elevator floor - where the doors close - so easy to drop something small down there, if you've had it in your hand.
Now, how to get that item back? I've done a fair bit of searching on this, and all I've found are suggestions on how to do this by calling the building manager etc. My character needs to it on the sly, by herself if possible. She's physically fit and can crawl around into places. She must get this back without anyone knowing about it.
I've seen movies about people climbing into the shaft and all that, but is that really possible? Are there handholds on the edges?
And is there a way to lock the elevator in place above you so someone can't send it down to the bottom? I guess she could just put an "out of order" sign on it and hope a maintenance worker doesn't investigate.
Is there any kind of open space beneath the elevator, even when it's on the bottom floor? Like a basement area beneath it to help with maintenance or something?
I asked one of the maintenance guys at work and he said they just call in the elevator company and he doesn't really know how it works. And that's only for important stuff - he said some things are just considered lost.
Thanks for any help.
