Nobel literature laureate Guenter Grass has died. (http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/13/living/gnter-grass-nobel-literature-author-death/)

His novel The Tin Drum was an amazing experience to read. I read others of his but the Drum is the one that stays in my memory. I have not seen an obituary yet; when I do I'll link here, or someone else can if you see one. (This is just a brief word from his publisher and announced via CNN.)

Here's one of many obituaries online, this one from The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/apr/13/gunter-grass-german-nobel-laureate-dies-aged-87

His death was unexpected. Salman Rushdie tweeted the perfect farewell: "Drum for him, little Oskar."

Too bad they didn't get his name right.

I have a Norwegian keyboard (, which makes non-English letters a lot easier.). So I'll put it her for easy copying: GŁnter Grass.

Also; It is a big loss for literature. He was a great man, and a great writer.

Yes, perhaps we should also ask little Oskar to drum for the missing umlauts of the world.

(Thanks, weirdmage.)

Guenter and GŁnter are the same. An Umlaut can be replaced by an e. It's quite normal and more and more common. I suspect the Umlaut will one day disappear. Wrong would be "Gunter", which is the usual way anlgos try to deal with the Umlaut.

I remember being deeply disappointed in the movie version of The Tin Drum, after reading the book. Although as layered and complex as it is, it would be very hard to do a film version, and I know that one was considered excellent by many.
