Pensacola, or anywhere on the Florida panhandle, if you mean U.S. It's hard to beat sugar white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees!

Also, Cancun/Cozumel, for the same reason.

Anyone in NYC got a beach recommendation? I've heard Brighton Beach and I've seen a bunch of people go up to Sea Gate but never been myself. Maybe this summer?

I love the beaches along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, especially in winter when there's no one else around. The back beaches on the Mornington Peninsula in Vic are also lovely.

In North Queensland, I'm rather fond of the beaches around Bowen and on Magnetic Island. And in the Far North, I adore Etty Bay, although I haven't been there for ages. You might have to keep an eye open for crocs at Etty Bay, but it's generally safe.

ok I can't add to this, as I have never been to a beach, but I have a neat little suggestion.

if you can.

IF YOU CAN.

you should put up pics of the beaches.

I can't upload pictures. But the image in my avatar is taken from our local children's play area.

The beach is as rocky as it is sandy, full of rock pools and interesting geology, and just off shore is the carcass of an old ship to explore.

It's not a beach for bathing, but you'll not find a sunset finer than the one at Morecambe Bay.

Now if i could only move that tropic of cancer up a thousand miles or so. Brrrr.

In the States, North Myrtle in South Carolina.
In the world, Manda Beach... Off the coast of Kenya.

I go to Brighton a lot. It's convenient, the water is usually pretty calm, and the sand is fine--though not the cleanest. NJ beaches are cleaner, but the water is rougher.

If you want to surf, try the Rockaways.

My fav beach in the US is on Hilton Head Island, SC.

Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda. Faintly pink fine-grained sand, turquoise water.

Maryn, who went there on an anniversary trip some years ago

I've been to so many beautiful ocean beaches... Pensacola, Cancun, Charleston, Sanibel Island, but the beaches on Lake Michigan hold a special place in my heart. If you can make it to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park (best in July or August), you'll see what I mean..

I like a great boardwalk. Venice CA and Wildwood NJ are two favorites.

I've always loved Corona del Mar, in Orange County, California. I haven't been there in a long time but it's always been a great place for a family day-trip.

Then there's San Felipe, in Mexico. It's on the western shore of the Gulf of California. I spent a week there when I was a teenager, camped out near a cliff overlooking the beach. Clearest, calmest, warmest water I've ever plunged into.

I visit the beach as often as I can but I can't remember the last time I took a swim or tried to work up a suntan there. That's because I'm afraid a bully will kick sand in my face, and steal my girlfriend or whatever. (I'm a 135-pound weakling). Mostly I'm interested in exploring the restaurants, taverns, shops, and sights along the shore. That's a really cool way to spend the day.

Jones Beach in New York was my first and I do have a soft spot for the first but I have to say Hollywood Beach in Hollywood, Florida is the best. My grand kids are just down the street and next winter, when I am retired, you will find me there from January till March--s6

Gwithian Towans in Cornwall. 3 miles of clean beach swept twice a day by the Atlantic Ocean. Massive sand dunes at the back with rare plants. And hardly anyone on it out of the holiday season.

My favourite place on the planet.

2nd favourite is Marloe Sands in Wales. Similar to the above but with rock pools instead of dunes.

The beach of my heart will always be Assateague Island National Seashore.

http://www.nps.gov/asis/index.htm

Natural beaches, nature trails, bird blinds, a sea side and a bay side, wild horses, lighthouse...it's got everything, but incessant commercialism.

Plus, on the way, you can stop at Wallops Island and visit NASA's flight facility there!

Ninety Mile Beach, New Zealand. Ninetymiles (give or take) of white sand beaches, clear warm waters, and no/few people.

The photo sitting on top of my desk right now is of sunrise at Chincoteague. Stunning!
