Pretty sure this is the weirdest question I've ever asked on AW, but here goes!

Let's say you were about to do this thing, but there's a slight chance your head could get cut off by supernatural forces. What would you wear for protection? I was thinking some kind of helmet, but that really only covers your head, not your neck, which is where the, um, breakage would presumably happen. It doesn't have to be 100% effective, just something a teenager would think of sort of last-minute to protect him/herself going into the situation.

Any thoughts on this?

For yanked, I'm picturing a helmet equipped with suspenders that run under the armpits.

...and cut the hair short.

Aw. Too bad. Reverse head-securing suspenders would be hilarious. :)

Just some ideas . . .

The big scarf he got from Aunt Martha for Christmas to wrap around his neck.

Homemade chainmail (say, made from chicken wire).

A homemade metal band (say, made from a large tin can).

A knight's helmet (the kind that covers the neck) that he steals from the school drama department.

A leather jacket with a large collar that he pulls up to cover his neck.

Seriously! I'm picturing such a device now and it's making me laugh.

I'm liking this homemade aspect. Maybe a motorcyle helmet with some kind of tacked-on collar.

A police riot helmet would work, but you'd need an explanation of how he got hold of one.

Hockey goalie gear has pretty good neck protection from the front. You'd be hard-pressed to find something relatively common that would work better without putting quite a bit of work into it.

You could think of things that could be turned around or doubled.

I seem to remember some movie where a kid wore two old-style baseball catcher's helmets. I can't remember why.

That's perfect! They're in Northern Canada so there's bound to be some hockey gear around. Ooh and there's even a thing called a throat protector. Thanks!

I'm surprised that you didn't recall that neckties were devised as protection against having one's neck cut off. People continued wearing them even after the danger diminished.
