View Full Version : Unconventional Actor Crushes

My husband and I are both fans of the show Justified. I quickly fell into crushin' on Timothy Olyphant. That's a pretty justifiable (no pun intended) crush, I think. Tall, dark and handsome. And the cowboy hat...yum.

Recently, we bought The Shield. The entire series. We've been binge watching every chance we get.

Well, somehow, I developed a crush on Walter Goggins. He is in both Justified and The Shield. In both, he plays the bad guy. He's not conventionally attractive at all, yet for some reason...

I think it may be because of his acting - this guy is a genius. He really is, IMO, of course. Or maybe it's because he plays the bad boy. I don't know.

All I know is he's been in my dreams the past two nights, and they have not been unpleasant.

Soooo...your turn.

What unexpected actors/actresses have you crushed on? That don't necessarily make sense to anyone else, but for some reason...you're attracted to them?

Time to fess up. :D

Yup. Halfway ashamed to admit that I started watching Justified because of Olyphant. :tongue

And Goggins, well Boyd is just a sweetie. He steals the show every time.

I think 90% of actor crushes are down to the characters they play, rather than the actor themselves.

I am not ashamed to admit a crush on Olyphant. That man is damn sexy, especially with that hat.

I didn't even start crushing on Goggins until watching The Shield, but you're right. I love Boyd.

Maybe it is the human inside the bad boys he plays. On The Shield, his dedication to his friends...the way he sobbed after killing one of them...he is such a bad guy, but deep inside, that isn't who he wanted to be, I don't think.

Maybe that's it.

Friends: While everyone was crushing on Jennifer Aniston... I always like Lisa Kudrow...

Eliza Dushku from Buffy and Angel fame. Though towards the end of Angel, Charisma Carpenter did grow on me. Though Amy Aker had her place too.

And a guy crush on Christian Kane. Followed him from Angel to Leverage...

Yeah, that Bob Hoskins.

I suppose one could say it was because talent is sexy, but I think it's because Hoskins was such a ferociously masculine little man - "a testicle on legs," as film critic Pauline Kael put it.

Look up the role he played in Sons of Anarchy and you will see an entirely different side of Walter Goggins... and yes, the man is an amazing actor.

I developed a little bit of a girl crush on Katey Sagal this fall after binge-watching SOA--one of those "I want to be like her when I grow up" crushes.

Oh, yeah. I've seen all of SOA (on Netflix, so I guess we're a season behind). Walter Goggins was incredible! Very, very believable.

I can understand the girl-crush. Although, I really hate her character on there. LOL But she is badass.

mrsmig - I think talent is sexy. Definitely. I think that's part of it. I was even more "turned on" to Goggins after reading that he is also a filmmaker, and a photographer (and checked out some of his photographs).

Definitely. I totally have a thing for Kaylee from Firefly, and not simply because Jewel Staite is pretty.
That's not a particularly unusual crush, although you might expect the more glamorous Inara to be the focus of more attention.
Then there's Willow vs 'This one time, at band camp' girl from American Pie. They look very similar, but I'd be all over Willow, while I found band camp girl annoying.

Andy Serkis. *sigh*

And there wasn't even a hot boy on boy sex scene to make it worth while. There was Karen Black being CRAZY like Scarlett O'Hara on a three day Heroine bender, but no gay sex.

(Oh, and here's a link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Dirt_(film)) to the Wikipedia page. Goggins apparently won Best Actor in something called the Slam Dunk Festival for his role in this mess.)

Oh me too, by a mile.

I love meeting kindred spirits. :D

I've had a thing for Timothy Olyphant since I first saw him in Go! years ago. He's so dang dreamy, even when playing a drug dealer getting it on with Katie Holmes. I don't have access to Justified but I've been crossing my fingers that it'll make it's way to Netflix soon.

A big one for me that only my husband and best friend know about is David Hyde Pierce. Or, more accurately, Niles Crane from Frasier. :o I have no idea why.

OMG, me too! I don't remember how old I was when it came out, but I totally had a crush on him. I didn't tell anyone though until I watched it with my daughter and told her that when I was younger, I thought Aladdin was cute - for an animated character.

Janeane also had a dazzling, mega-watt smile. All the ink she's sporting today makes her a little less hot today. She also doesn't seem to smile as much any more. :(

Garafolo seems to have wearied of playing the Hollywood game and settled into a strident liberal phase of her life. I can respect her decision without liking it.

I have an illogical attraction to Amy Poehler. I don't find her conventionally a knock-out, but something about that half-smile of hers drives me nuts.

A lot of the old time actresses. Some that maybe wouldn't be considered conventionally sexy like Barbara Stanwyck (to be honest, that's more like true love). Mia Farrow, probably considered beautiful, but not obviously a sexpot, I don't think. Carolyn Jones, I once met her much younger husband in a bar and I and the buddy I was with had a drink with him. First of all, there's April Hong. This is an unconventional choice because I've never actually seen her performing on TV or in a movie! I only know who she is because I saw her in a video interview alongside her father, legendary character actor James Hong. From the interview I learned that April has a small resume of TV guest appearances, and is an instructor at her dad's acting workshop. If I ever meet her I'll say, "I love you, April...for reals, I'm not acting!"

Also, Amy Adams and Becki Newton. I think Amy is a great actress and I think Becki always stands out above the crowd in her many TV sitcom gigs. This time the unconventional thing is that I prefer very dark hair -- black or very dark brown. So it's unusual that a redhead or blonde would catch my eye and make me swoon, or whatever it's called.

Well, I don't know if I'd call that unconventional unless you're talking about crushing on her now at her current age. I Googled her, and she was...you're right. Insufferably adorable, cute, and beautiful. She still is today...just older. :)

Yeah, I can't even claim drunkenness as an excuse; we'd just gotten there. That's exactly what he said to me, "You put your foot in your mouth now."

Barbara Feldon from Get Smart. Paula Prentiss from the old beach movies. Molly Ringwald. The girl who works the evening shift at my market; don't know if she's an actress, but it wouldn't surprise me. I'm sure studies have been done, but I wonder just what sensory triggers are in play here. For me it's there or it's not there, and there's really no predicting it; is that how it is for everyone? Some of the most beautiful women, by most guys' standards' leave me cold. And some who most might call plain, I find incredibly attractive. There could almost be a spin off thread, Sex Symbols that Don't do it for you.. My entries might be women like, ready, believe it or not, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lolobrigita (though I love Sophia Loren). Who else? Angelina Jolie, (late night, mind going slowwwwly today.. I tend to go for the ones who aren't so obvious. Ava Gardner for instance, in my estimation was not nearly as sexy as Ida Lupino.

I think it depends on the person.

I'm not even sure it's the same all the time for each person. I'm looking back on my IRL crushes...and they were across the board in high school. There was one guy who wasn't physically attractive at all, but man could he make me laugh! He was goofy and funny and at times obnoxious, yet I had a mild crush on him.

There was one guy - an actor who shall remain nameless - who also wasn't what you'd think "hot" at ALL. Short, round face, cute maybe but looking about 12 when we graduated. Yet he had major talent (singing and acting) and was majorly smart, and all that turned me on.

There were also guys that were conventionally attractive, but even in real life, those aren't ALWAYS the ones that smack me upside the head.

My ex-husband had nice dimples when he smiled and pretty eyes, but he carried a good 25 pounds more than he should have (at least by the time we divorced). His dimples and outgoing-ness got me (too bad I realized too late exactly how outgoing he was...if you get my drift).

My current husband, when we met, was just plan tall and gorgeous. He's put on some weight now, but he's working to lose it. But what really got me was his love for his daughter, his loyalty to his family and close friends, and his dedication to providing and protecting us.

So sorry for the long ramble, but you got me thinking. :) And I think best out loud. On a writing forum, out loud = typing on the screen.

I don't think I really answered your question.

I've heard other women say, Jon Stewart. Also Steve Buscemi and Jeff Goldblum who were also mentioned. A lot of men might hear these picks and say, "Whaaat?!" I guess in that Scarlett doesn't look like everyone else...she isn't exactly a traditional beauty.

But if you go by that definition, who is? Other than all the model lookalikes? Angelina with her cheek bones and ridiculously beautiful lips, Nicole Kidman and her softness, Julia Roberts with her bigger teeth and features set not quite perfectly but are somehow perfect in their beauty. I'm a huge classic film fan so I tend to have more crushes on classic film actors. Some of them are pretty obvious (like Lawrence Olivier and Steve McQueen) but some are maybe less obvious (like Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney). In those days, actors were not beauty kings and queens necessarily. They were stars because they had talent and star quality. I tend to be attracted to that more than looks.

Hmmm... unconventional.

I have a long list of what my husband is pleased to call my 'spank bank'. It has been added to over time, but seldom taken away from. Some are here because they are MUCH older or younger than me :)

As a side note, an Irish, Scottish or English accent is more than enough to bump someone into the bank :)

I'm just going to list all I can think of, as I'm not sure which would be considered unconventional. In no particular order:

Alan Alda
Ian McShane
Robert Carlyle
James Spader
Sean Bean (even when he dies)
Noah Wyle
Julian Rhind-Tutt (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0722279/?ref_=tt_cl_t11)
Dylan Moran (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0602836/?ref_=tt_cl_t1)
Sam Heughan (Outlander)
Ioan Gruffudd
Rowan Atkinson
Benedict Cumberbatch
Robert Downey Jr.
Piers Brosnan (perhaps my most mainstream choice?)
Viggo Mortensen
Tom Hiddleston
Ian McKellan
Hugh Laurie

I love Peter Dinklage I am always telling my hubby he is hot. I also love Iwan Rheon on Game of Thrones even though he is a psychopath and finally Martin Freeman for a long time now since he was in Love Actually but I haven't admitted this one to my husband yet I don't think he would get it.

After looking through this thread, I spotted several mentions of actors that I have had crushes on (David Hyde Pierce, Steve Buscemi, Martin Freeman, Peter Dinklage, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson). But I'm surprised that no one mentioned John Oliver. Is he not unconventional enough?

As for the more unconventional ones, Peter Sellers had a way of being pathetically cute (especially as Inspector Clouseau). And James Earl Jones was damn good-looking when he was younger (and his voice certainly didn't hurt things either).

When I was four, I had a crush on Underdog. I grew out of that.

I still quite fancy the fox in the cartoon film Robin Hood.

If we're including cartoon characters, I had a bit of a crush on Atom Ant when I was about 7 years old. (Maybe "crush" isn't the best word to use when talking about an ant.)

I know he isn't conventionally handsome, but I always had a huge crush on Peter Falk as Columbo, especially in the earlier seasons. He was so sweet, funny and bright. And terribly loveable :)

I also had a crush on Peter Sellers. He was really cute in the first Pink Panther movies. And so dashing in Casino Royale ;)

And then, I really love Jeremy Renner, even in his bad guys role as in S.W.A.T. or The Town. I know I shouldn't have been but I was rooting for him more than Colin Farrell in S.W.A.T. X)
