Khadrae - vicious velociraptor type beasts with no eyes, echo location abilities and razor like claws ready to eviscerate you at the drop of a hat.

Cheddar - a type of cheese.

This is what happens if you leave autocorrect.

It would make for an interesting story though - The cheddar leapt forward and viciously ate the soldiers leg. Even as he screamed, more cheddar jumped on him and ate him alive. You get the idea! The Return of the Halloween Cheddar! Wooooooh!!

Craig, once Word corrected backstabbing as backstopping on a MS. Not exactly the nuance I was looking for.

It's undeniably useful at times, but you do have to keep an eye on the computer code gremlins.

My, that's a particularly amusing one, isn't it?

I once had a character nattering, to her boyfriend's annoyance, corrected by Word to neutering, to her boyfriend's annoyance. Now that's one mellow boyfriend, to be merely annoyed.

Maryn, beware the cheddar!

I once figured in a news article that had changed the first part of my name to Sari.

Somewhere out there is a poem titled "Owed to a Spell Checker." Almost every word in it is a misspelling that passes mustard :))) with the checker.

Blessings,

I once wrote, "oooooooo," on a friend's post. Auto correct made it, "lollipop." It is now an acceptable alternative to, "ooooooo." It's not all fail.

I leave autocoreect off (see? I practice what I preach!) but I still have it underline misspellings.

My favorite was actually a "find and replace flub." I changed a character's name from Lance to Brice, only to have my charaters shoot each other suggestive gbrices. "Match case" and "whole words only" are my friends.

Until I settle on final character and place names, I'm careful to use place-holders which are not likely to appear within other words. James and Sheila work.

I use all-caps for things like that, and turn on "Ignore words in UPPERCASE".

For example:
The closer we got to SUBDIVISION, the drier my mouth got and the faster my heart pounded. I felt like we were headed into the lion's den.

If you use a lot of foreign words (as I do) or lots of dialect or oddball spellings, lock the auto-correct function in the basement, and don't let it out.

The voice of experience says NEVER call a character "Will" and then change your mind and use find and replace....

ETA in my first MS I decided to replace "king" with another title

Not a good plan

You'd think I would have learned but oh no. I have now!

AW. A very nice place!
Sometimes it even doesn't recognize ordinary words in the dictionary. In general though spellcheck is very helpful. Not autocorrect though. I leave that off and do the checking afterwards. Shameful to be sure.

To be fair, cheddar is quite dangerous.

If you eat as much of it as I do.

But currently I've replaced search-and-replaced it with a healthy substitute!

Hallowe'en candy. :D
