i'm entering PitchSlam, but i don't get the requirement to compare my MC to a comic world hero. (Hero: The hero or heroine your protagonist best relates to and why.) i know nothing about comic heroes. my MS is contemporary romance. makes me feel like i'm in the wrong place, ya know?

I didn't see that requirement. I saw the squads have heroes helping them.

it's part of the entry "form" listed here: http://tangynt.wordpress.com/2014/09/29/attention-pitchslam-recruits-its-nearly-time/

Name: Real name (Writing as such-and-such if you are utilizing a secret identity)

Genre: This includes both age category and genre. Fiction is not a genre. YA/MG etc on its own is not a genre. Please pick ONE genre and possibly a sub-genre. Adult Paranormal Romance is a proper genre. YA Sci-Fi Horror is a proper genre. MG Magical Realism Paranormal Romance Horror is not a genre. An easy way to do this is ask yourself, if my book was in a store, what would the sign on the shelf say?

Title: Your story

Word Count: xx,000. Round to the nearest thousandth.

Hero: The hero or heroine your protagonist best relates to and why.

Pitch and/or 250: During Recruitment it will be pitch only. During Basic Training it will be the first 250 only. During Combat Drill it will be both together with pitch followed by 250.

Hey! I'm a host in Pitch Slam & I can tell you that you are not in the wrong place. The hero question is just like the music question we had with the first Pitch Slam. It goes with the theme and tells us a bit more about your story, but isn't going to kill you if you don't say something fantastic. Just something fun really.

This is the advice I gave someone who asked about this same thing on my blog and I hope it helps.

What the question means is you pick the hero or heroine that best fits your MC and what they're fighting for. (This is what you think and it could be anyone for any reason. It's totally up to you!) For example: If your MC goes from scrawny to muscles and uses his newfound abilities to fight for justice, then you could say he's like Captain America. (But a better example than that because that's meh.) I hope this helps. Good luck!

If you have any questions about anything regarding Pitch Slam, you can always ask us. We're on the #PitchSlam tag and I promise we won't bite! :)

I don't think this covers everything, but here are the main ones:
#PitMad: Dec. 4
#PitchMAS: Dec. 7
#SFFpit (sci-fi and fantasy authors): Dec. 9

They're all coming up soon, but don't rush. There are lots of good contests in the new year~
