View Full Version : Poem about the person above you.

03-23-2006, 04:36 AM
Just trying something out. Maybe it could be fun! I propose we do similar to the OP "write something about the person above you" thread except with poetry.

might also suggest that you try to do it by emulating their style if possible (JAlpha and haikus for example.)

Just a suggestion. Play if you like!

I'll do the first one about JAlpha since I mentioned her first.

She is quick witted
JAlpha queen of haikus
few words; big sweet thoughts

There once was a lady named Trish
Whose children were cute as a wish
Her screen name was Stew
Her hair, quite a doo,
As a poet, she was simply delish

03-23-2006, 07:50 AM
She sure can create!
I don't think I'd ever hesitate,
to read her poems--they're all great!

They're full of feeling and imagery,
whether the subject be romantic or bleary.
Keep on writing, Cassie88!
Or this fan of yours will get quite irate!

03-23-2006, 08:08 AM
Too bad; this one's staying.

now and then, the lion's eyebrow arches
she tenders her opinions without fear
she doesn't dominate the daily chatter
but when she speaks, the wise ones cock an ear

Her poetry is vivid and inspiring
it's oft received with cascades of applause
So Hail Ms Eighty-Eight, the regal Cassie
But how'd you hold a pen between those paws?

Mom with aplomb
whose posts are the bomb
Three myster-E kids
and yet, you're so calm!

Through flow and through ebb
she's witty, our Shwebb
Just check her haiku
and you'll know she's no pleb.

This poem's a mess
('cause I'm under duress)
but if Shwebb knows I like her...
then it's a success.

Poet In A Hat

His words quietly
wind up scales to the ninth
and down again
diminishing the fifth
skipping past four to
a bluesy third
they tumblefall
ignite senses
satiating the ear
while stomach

down bright
he lifts his face
full in the sun
bright with words
like music
like laughter
like sorrow
like morning
and you know
as chorus
words fall to
your hand
in verse without

head lowers
still singing
his face slightly shadowed
though moving in light
watch in stunned silence
words filling your mind
in this way and that
verses still echo
from the poetinahat

03-23-2006, 08:54 PM
(ok dirk, I sort of ripped you off here. I went looking through your posts and came upon Truth - and then it seemed so appropriate, I re-wrote it for you! I hope you don't mind.)

Dirk speaks slowly

speaks truth
to help and guide you.

reflects differently
remains constant.

Dirk crits and rewrites
for good measure.

Dirk is.
critical eye,
guiding hand,

Dirk is very Patient.

Stew21, son of a gun, (Do guns have daughters?)
Is having fun
With everyone
In poetry spun
Words that run
Under the sun

I think I'm done
Except to say she's cute too!

03-24-2006, 08:11 AM
Allrightythen, Nateskate- forgive me- not much on your profile....

There once was a pot named Nateskate
Who often wrote and stayed up late
Inspired by Python
Watched HOLY GRAIL 'til the dawn
For the sister Dingo he does not hate

I once knew a Pretty Special Gal
Said, I'd love to be her pal
She may not know it,
But this poem will show it,
The ball's in her court now

Gal knows fun when she sees it
What's more, she likes to be it (fun)
I can tell by her look
She's a marvelous book
So, I think I'll start to read it

Harmless Giant Nate

she's dynamite wit,
great syllabic explosion;
My haiku hero

Stew's kids
Are a work of art.
And they were
Right from the very start.
She is sweet
And oh, so kind.
Definitely she has charisma
And is quite a find!

there’s a gentleness
buried too deep
in the human heart
so lost
so forgotten
so tragically muted
by the cynical
mask of the modern face

but kindness kindles
a steady flame in
the soothing
words of susie

03-26-2006, 08:30 AM
Close the tear
Fit the edges
Daub it over
In golden words
Mixed with bile

Praise the effort
Of the infant
Draw the beauty
From the stubborn,
Clumsy verse

Wiseman, Father
Warrior, Guide
Frankincense and Myrrh
Are wasted
Bring him peace

03-26-2006, 04:27 PM
'It's a spade,' she writes
of the spade.
'Its slim wedged edge
is perfect
for turning firm earth.
Not the choice
for chiseling concrete
or faceting

'I disagree,' she writes
'This is why, my friend,'
she argues
and she couldn't be franker
yet her well-turned
posts are
absent of rancour.

In conclusion, I write
Perks is of rare mettle
her gilt-lyric filigrees
always move me
yet through her
I always know
where I stand.

03-27-2006, 02:41 AM
I've been written about (and astonishingly well so) already, but I very much wanted to write about Perks.

Please feel free to write about someone else.

Our Poet is a wordsmith
When it comes to verse and prose,
And for his lyric wit and style
We now award this rose.
He's blessed with talent fine and rare
But also has a gift
For letting others know he cares,
And giving hearts a lift.

Pat used to drive a Mustang.
But she lost it in a wreck. Dang!
She is a Christian and believes in God.
As a fellow believer, I find this not odd!

Deep calls to deep.
Its voice carries on the wind
Twisting through birch and oaks
Before alighting soft as a feather.

She heard his voice in a dream, and
Understood that in poetry
Wisdom sings its choicest songs.

As PIAH said earlier, y'all can skip me, since I have already had some written about me, and write one for someone else on the board if you would like! :)

of flavors and spices

To me, Stew is a delight

not quite abstract, nor

To me, Stew is an angel

A valiant warrior of truth
A traveler of songs
A soldier of strength and family
A teacher of friendship and kindness
A poet of love and life
He's my hero
My friend
My companion

in this vast world of conceit and deceit

she never means to hurt,
honesty a cross to bear
tempered with hilarity.

I don't know Paint
but I have read her words,
so skillfully splashed
on a screen of white.

There is an art to poetry
and it seems that Paint
knows this well
as she paints her pictures
in words.

Unspoken thanks
must find a voice.

Who welcomes the hostess?
Perhaps exhausted
(but who could tell?)
She smiles
at her guests' delight
as the level of their revel
proclaims the success
of her largesse.

She, who regales us
with her leaves of gentle poetry
and her warm patronage
of that talismanic bubbling tub,
is so infused here
that her testament is everywhere.

What one of us could speak for all?
Quietly, a murmur through the crowd
does its work.

Thats all I know of you so far

All I know of you
is that you write poems too
but I know yours are good
and I know mine are crap!

And how shall I make my stew
with rabbit, frog, or caribou?

'None of these', she said to me
'Don't kill animals; set them free'

Instead she wanted a racy thong
Not too short, not too long

'Get thee into the House', she said
'Bring me back *******'s head'

With a little wine and a little spice
I'll show you some Stew - very nice. :e2brows:

A unique sense of humor
A unique sense of style
She may not cure your tumor
But she sure will go the mile

To make you feel giggly
Or make you feel welcome
Even if you're wiggly
She'll still make you hum

A unique song of happy
A unique light of sun
A unique kind of sappy
A unique friend of fun

Ray is the best
That is for sure
A writer, a lover
of all that is good
with a heart so pure.

Ray is the man
No doubt about it
Shake your bootie

He can't live without it

she stands, mercurial
a red hot heart
gripped tightly in her right hand
crimson dripping,
splashing her ankles

she weeps, lamenting
saline drops of repentance
white washing
her stone-grey countenance,
splashing her ankles

she kneels, beseeching
thunderstrikes of mercy
astonishing her
while feathery hope falls,
splashing her ankles

And together they chanted
"Resistance if futile!"
They made me eat lobster tail,
And now I am one of them.

Beware of the creepy daves!

he's the tambourine man
The dancer with pretty words

Exuberant, but much too old
for the years he carries
Plays a game, strikes a chord

Cigarette dreams

A cosmic surprise

Darkness hiding,
deep in the mist.

A smile comes quick
upon my face
when I spot a poem
that Dirk has placed

I'd love to hear

or whispered, chanted
even hummed

He puts his heart
into his work
he pours it out
we like our Dirk

She takes pen in hand
Steps outdoors, smells the land
Fresh Ideas elude her
Maybe inspired by virtue or nature
A beautiful thought is only a butterfly away
She spends the day, looking for answers
A few words flow from pen to paper
How she gets inspired by what her eyes see
The trees and grass, a small child smiling
keeping saddness from her thoughts , lying under the trees
a gentle breeze, clears her mind, for she has been looking
for what today, she came to find
Beauty in nature inspires even the most blocked writer.

Jongfan, or is that Jung?
This lady is not what she seems.
Boring and proper, ambitious and clean?
But 'neath all that shimmer

With leather and lace,
a dangerous grace
and lust like you never have seen.

And I think Dave deserves some fame too.

Red, mostly red
That's what I think
Thoughtful indeed
Words plumbing unexpected depths
Profundity in play again, and again
Quick connotations broadcast in jest
Thick with meaning

A plural poet
in a singular shell

She ponders
her words wander
spinning yarns

She charms
She warms

Our friend
Amusing and clever

Friendly and fun
she's the lady with class
Puttering with her garden,

All that we need

That one who wants no power

up and down
smashed her crown into the ground

why should you
never mind I'll just write you a poem
to crush you and smash you
but love you and cherish
I'll prose you to death with my wit
the poem must surely acquit

Hwat, great Godfather!
Wielder of words, fashioner of phrases
O'erarching the oceans, witty in writing.
How comes he, youthful in years
So wise in wordchoice? We listen with longing,
Wishful with wonder. Time passes tedious
Until all at once, youth escapes after years
Of patient repose. Diploma delivered;
Education is ended. Free to finally
Look to the literary. Poems and prose are
Published with pleasure, devoured with delight!

[Don't ask me why this came out in pseudo-Icelandic/Anglo-Saxon form. I couldn't manage any true kennings, but no one would have understood them anyway. :)]

God when I think of Timothy Dylan and co
those times of yesterday when high was not just altitude
and guys could sit and toke a bit and think life was just, well, let it happen
times like those have disappeared, politically right has taken might
then along comes some young knight
and sits and contemplates
about towns and cities and all the pretties
and puts it all down and shares,
is youth what it is or a reborn Krebs
that G is not wearing a beret?
So he beats and walks with friends somewhere
and tries to figure em out
why does HE want to be my friend
that's cool he can try
and what's cooler?
He can!

11-01-2006, 10:35 PM
Before me is a lobster
a lyrical on at that
claws become maracas
while his tail drums out the beat
His antenni sway in time
happy in his world of prose
that makes others cheer and weep.

So not into drama
The kind we all hate
But creative nuance
Spilling over her plate

Kitty’s happily napping
At her feet while she taps
On the keyboard before her
Then jumps on her lap

It’s hot there in Texas
Even though Fall is here
But Deborah stays cool
Talented author, it’s clear.

So completely into vino
an evening drink she sips
increased creative juice
thus changing her fate

She’s discriminatingly tasting
a crystal glass in each hand
whirling inky fluid
aromatic syrah

her internal heat’s arising
dew sweats the grape
cooling glances arrive
goodness it's her Fall!

Three syllables, three vowels
ending in a whisper

beyond the world of humans
to a life divine.

rivana, rivano
her signature once
mentioned a piano.
rivana, noble swede
marvellous poet,
who likes to read.
rivana, rivasses
that rivana, who's
avatar wears glasses.

quite a silly poem really my dear, but i couldn't bear to delete it. it is about you after all, it would be a crime.

11-22-2006, 03:15 AM
So surf do I on these boards
and never more partake
well maybe just a little bit
when I see Rivana's name

She has told us that
she is dark of heart
and her poetry does sometimes
be dark, be deep, from inside the shadows
yet sunbeams flick inside as well.

Though her smile is secret
I am sure I know
that when Rivana smiles
it makes cold hearts jump and glow

So this I tell you friend or foe
the truth is when she smiles or frowns
you do not have to wonder why
if real if feigned or trite
our Rivana writes her truth and so
she lets us share her heart her soul!

yet dear Rivana smiles in light!

so sorry G beat me to it but it was nice to write one about Rivana so I am glad dispite my late night fright!

11-22-2006, 03:18 AM
G a poet beatnic kid
that writes and wears his soul aloud
kinda nice to see him beat his wits
to share his bright and witty chits

Daves, some days
are just like you.
They live and love
and laugh like you do.
Other days our Daves
feel down -
lost the sparkle,
lost the crown.
But every day
our Dave will be
the best of gentlemen
you'll see.
Daves are meant
for writing out
the things that others
only talk about.
Be it darker than the night,
be it brighter than the light
Dave will say what's on his mind -
and even if you're blind,
you'll see, in time
Daves are great
to have around.

Rivana, poet
Watching through
avatar's spectacles
the world turning
over - light, dark,
Multifaceted imagery
My only regret is
I do not know her better

Some days
life is simple
it's easy to slide across
ice that is freshly smoothed

Twenty-four hours hold
so much possibility

Some days
life is arduous
unseen creases catch a toe
knees crash against crystal cool

Twenty-four hours carry
so much turbulence

Some hearts
project fortitude
anticipating need
defining purpose

Some stories
give hope
borrowing joy
until a new day dawns

Twenty-four hours hold
so much promise
in the utterings of
our Troubadour

Ah, muse of fire tumultous bred,
Glance but on our pens, they catch aflame
A circle of poetry crowns thy head
Speaking forth their prose when you do speak your name

And from thy eyes spark thunderous rains
Falling with inspiring dew towards the ground
Moistening every writer's thirsty veins
With heated inspiration's heady wounds

Still walk thou here, soft and serene
And leave not thy humble followers
But stay most, thou muse and queen
With P.H. Dellarran, thy words be hers

And with this plea my humble sonnet ends
That muse with muse should be friends.

11-28-2006, 05:04 AM
for Beyondian
only haiku will suffice
the muse, short and sweet

delicate flavored heat
of warm spiced
liquid coolness
of metaphor, dripping
like icicles in spring
tantalizing tingles
top them;
her alliterations.
her poetry,
a tasty treat.

Most are content
with obvious beauty,
a bronzing leaf
a well formed rose
pretty images in a poem;
Nature’s prizes on display

Who turns the leaf
And traces the veins
Intricate pipelines
Carrying vital essence

Who plucks the petals
And caresses the delicate Stamen
Admiring its carnal purpose

Who studies the missing words
And sees the Poet’s heart
Knowing what could have been said

Who gives to us a gilded mirror
Magically reflecting
her own caste of beauty
onto our image

three syllables open to intepretation
Philosophical Doctor of letters?

letters sifting down lightly
sparkling consonants coating ideas
vowels voice their jewelled tones

letters Piled Higher and Deeper
in drift upon drift of meaning
wonderland of words brought to life

Davids is creepy that's true
But there's something that only he knew
Submerge him in water
So cold that he oughter
Freeze, then he'll only turn blue.

Maggie knits books into language
makes sense of the ball of yarn
that yearns to be a sweater,
takes knitted hieroglyphics
and arms her readers with needles
deadly, to carve their new knowledge
into eventualities of warmth.

clasped-hand steeple
and a bow
to the word wizard -
moonshine moodswings
memory maker,
melancholy master.
Poet Sensei.
He is a weaver
with threads of magic
and light
the taste of flight,
winged and wicked.
His readers lose the line
between own truth
and the one he created;
wrapped in cloak,
new word wishes,
soaked in ether
of what lies between
and placed
in the heart;
disguised as
repressed memory,
new thought and
same feeling;
voodoo dejavu.
stand straight
and smile
when he takes
your hand
with no fear
as he leads you
to cliff's edge.
Hold tight,
breathe in
let your full lungs burn!
and fly.

01-12-2007, 10:32 PM

if she knew
how simple
and how perfect
she is
she would be
simply perfect

01-13-2007, 12:37 AM
dclary, dclary,
i bet you think
this poem is about you.
You're a swell guy
i know this to be true,
but the heaven above you,
the wondrous angel
with the glowing wingspan
of doves--
she's the one I want to praise.
Trishka tells a tale
in poetics strong enough
to knock the socks
off the dead--dclary is swell
but Trishka forces tears
to trace this aging poet's
blushing cheeks.
So, Clary-D, have your day,
dance if you may, or wish,
just wave
to the one above you
along the way--
she's my poison
for today.

01-13-2007, 12:46 AM
a haiku will do
I should say it suffices
to agree with you

01-13-2007, 01:13 AM
KTC and DClary

for the smile
and soul
in the words today
i can only say,
thank you both,
you shining and true,
wordsmiths for
the sweets you've given me.
I'm blessed to have
your good opinions
and cherish
the words
you offered to me.
So in return,
I give
a bow
and wink
my sensei
a wave
and boo
my ghost.

01-13-2007, 01:22 AM
Trish has made us blush
a thrush of love is she
a happy lady
to help a May Day
and smile our boo boo's away!

A blushing lobster is a delicious thing
Flaming red crustacean
Hides sweet white pearlescent flesh
Trembling with desire
I lay aside my pick and cracker
Delay my gratification until after the next poem is complete

01-13-2007, 01:36 AM
Maggie knit my heart together
for it truly needs your skill and care
it sometimes feels like taffy pull
till your sweet kraft
fulfills the pull

01-27-2007, 06:19 PM
He wears a lobster,
lets it say
he's crusty
but I believe
our lobster friend
is red
because his heart
is on his sleeve.
and the red one
blushes pink
when a kind word
is sent his way.

Surrounded in auburn and gold
They walk, hand in hand
Head on shoulder
And she observes,
From behind, she observes
A quiet solitude
A bonding of men and boys,
Father and sons.
She has no fear that
She, apart,
Is separated by gender
By distance, by choice.
She has no fear,
For she feels the love flow
As the shutter snaps,
And the moment is captured.

02-13-2007, 08:59 PM
I'm in a huge rush at work so can't write one right now. I'm sorry, so I'm just out of turn and messing up the flow to say Thank you Tammy, and here's that picture:

04-08-2007, 10:23 PM

you used to have some gall,
to be so cheeky to me and all.
but soon you 'came sweet
a stew, good enough to eat.
and that's how we all see you,
that how we see you girl.

you wrote a poem for me,
wrote how i slammed the keys.
you got into the soul of a man,
and here's where the rhyme stops.

keep smiling,
do us good, do us proud.
you always do.

04-11-2007, 05:50 PM
I got a spurt of inspiration today
and then I saw your name,
and I thought:
Godfather, I think
you're an inspiration
all on your very own.
So young and strong and
full of song.
Baby believe me,
everyone can see;
you're going places, man.
If you want to.

04-11-2007, 06:17 PM
Spurts purts and pinky dinky
Rivana is sure not a stinky
gone for a while
just to see her big smile
in witty suitable jibes
will sit my old butt
in formidable jutt
to see her sweet tootsies
walk on my petooties
she sings with coyful deny
and brings us her love on the fly

Hell it is early-been up all night and it is the best little luvvy dovey poem I can write to show a friend she is welcome home-beat me with a Petunia if you must-nice to see you dear heart!

04-14-2007, 06:18 AM
davids is a lobster, scarlet as my name,
crimson as the blood I shed when crying out your name.
His carapace, unbroken; toughened like the shell
I grew around my cold, dead heart when crawling through this hell.
These words I offer humbly, knowing they could never
melt the ice around your heart. If only I was clever,
I'd write a love song for you, my words just couldn't fail,
but davids is a lobster and there's a sting in your tail.

04-14-2007, 12:39 PM
Scarlet for the feelings,
the blood that boils,
Peaches for the sweet,
the beloved dreams,
Together they make
a person of complex mind,
a lady of stubborn will
to know herself.
a contented grace,
when she sits alone
by the fireplace.

Well, that's my theory at least. ;-)

Luke flees the scene
04-14-2007, 06:45 PM
Rivana walks through the shadows
The darkness she fights,
Whispering on her shoulders
Ignoring it fails,
Provoking it worse
There's really no chance of defeating it
But that's what courage is

04-11-2009, 10:51 AM
'life flies,' said the wingless ant
steadily he followed his brother
as he traveled, head to the ground

today's load was not heavy
but empty hands will be scolded
and he wished for wings

something tittered above him
vibrating tones he's never heard
what strange creature lurks above?

his path suddenly blocked
but this hill he climbs willingly
better than wings, this ride

alone on the ledge he looks out
a vastness beyond his comprehension
'life flies,' he said, to no one there

this was such a fun thread for a bit, thought I'd bump it and see if any of the more recent poets here wanted a go.
