I'm just wondering if recorded songs are ever posted here for comments/observations like poems are in the poetry forum. I'm not talking about the person who wrote the song and looking for feedback. I mean previously recorded songs (by popular or not so popular artists) posted for discussion. If it hasn't been done here, would it be kosher to do so? Obviously, attributing the writer in the process. I often come across what I consider brilliant lyrics and wonder what other songwriters think of them.

I don't see why it can't at least be fun.
You should have started with an example, but since you haven't, I will.

I'm going to start with Pink Floyd. I just love their cerebral poetry.

Pink Floyd
(Mason, Waters, Wright, Gilmour)
Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

You know, if you look at this song, it has more than one cliche, which, if you look a many songs, seems to be okay in songwriting.
Pink Floyd just seems to put them together better than most.

Great example, Albedo. It's only in seeing it in writing that I realise how great the ending is.

P.S. If you haven't heard it, check out Easy Star All-Stars' "Dub Side of the Moon" -- a dub-reggae reworking of the whole album. It's an idea that could have been terrible, but it's very, very well done, and well worth the cash!

"Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain."

I think that's my favorite line. I'm not great at analyzing poetry in any form, but I like how certain folks use the language. I especially like songwriters who don't have a plethora of love songs in their catalogue. Beck is one of my favorites. That's who I was listening to when I started the thread. Of course it helps that he's a musical virtuoso and I love his tunes, but his lyrics are great as well.

I just realized this. There is no chorus with this song. The same with others of Floyd's. Now, I'm off to see if this phenomona happens with any others' songs.

Beck sometimes writes songs with no real chorus, although the one I'm posting now has one. Maybe next time I'll post one without. I was listneing to this today and I love it. You might have to hear it to really appreciate it. I love his voice and the way delivers certain lines and words like "old bones," "Put a song in your throat," and "Pigsties and prizes." Heck I like 'em all, I just love his lyrics and his songs. He's so freakin' talented, it makes me sick to my stomach that people like Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews are so popular. Don't get me wrong, Dave's a very skilled guitarist, but his musical taste is blah, IMO. Okay, the rant is over, on to the song.

"Ramshackle" by Beck (download it if you haven't heard it along with "Jackass" from the same album, Odelay)

You've been so long
Your blind eyes are gone
Your old bones are on their own
So take off your coat
Put a song in your throat
Let the dead-beats pound all around

We will go
Nowhere we know
We don't have to talk at all
Hand me downs
Flypaper towns
Stuck together
One and all

The bargains you drive
Buckets and bags
And all your belongings
Your train's in the sand
Ramshackle land
Let the rats watch the races

We will go
Nowhere we know
'Til we find our one and all
Hand me downs
Flypaper towns
Stuck together
One and all

Praises get spent
Your trick face is bent
Pigsties and prizes
'Cause there's no kind of wealth
You're suiting yourself
You leave yourself behind

We will go
Nowhere we know
'Til we find our one and all
Your hand me downs
Flypaper towns
Stuck together
One and all

Another good one...aged but timeless.

Rock N' Roll Suicide ~ David Bowie

Time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth
You pull on your finger, then another finger, then your cigarette
The wall-to-wall is calling, it lingers, then you forget
Ohhh how how how, you’re a rock ’n’ roll suicide

You’re too old to lose it, too young to choose it
And the clocks waits so patiently on your song
You walk past a cafe but you don’t eat when you’ve lived too long
Oh, no, no, no, you’re a rock ’n’ roll suicide

Chev brakes are snarling as you stumble across the road
But the day breaks instead so you hurry home
Don’t let the sun blast your shadow
Don’t let the milk float ride your mind
You’re so natural - religiously unkind

Oh no love! you’re not alone
You’re watching yourself but you’re too unfair
You got your head all tangled up but if I could only
Make you care
Oh no love! you’re not alone
No matter what or who you’ve been
No matter when or where you’ve seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I’ve had my share, I’ll help you with the pain
You’re not alone

Just turn on with me and you’re not alone
Let’s turn on with me and you’re not alone (wonderful)
Let’s turn on and be not alone (wonderful)
Gimme your hands cause you’re wonderful (wonderful)
Gimme your hands cause you’re wonderful (wonderful)
Oh gimme your hands.
