The headline is a shocker and may be premature AND misleading (article says they are "in talks" but not about what), but still...

The publishing industry (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/15/us-amazon-com-cbs-corp-idUSKBN0FK2MN20140715) could be turned onto its head with a recent revelation that Amazon is in talks with big 5 publisher Simon and Schuster. No one seems to know what the discussions are about, whether it has to do with eBook pricing or if they are talking about an acquisition. If Amazon were to purchase S&S it would give Amazon major distribution to physical bookstores and finally legitimate their own publishing imprints.
I suppose "Amazon discussing ebook pricing with Simon and Schuster" wouldn't get nearly as much attention.

That story links to thos Reuters article with a more reasonable-sounding headline:
Amazon in talks with Simon & Schuster: Moonves

I see no indication that Amazon wants to buy S&S here, but it's still an interesting read, and related to other recent news about Amazon:

(Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is in talks with Simon & Schuster Inc, the chief executive of the book publisher's parent company said on Tuesday, representing a second front in Amazon's feud with the publishing industry over digital book pricing.
The talks come as the largest online book retailer remains locked in a months-long impasse with Hachette, owned by France's Lagardere, over the price of e-books sold on Amazon's digital shelves.

This one explains why the first jumped to that conclusion. Basically it's that it's all guesswork on what they're talking about. http://www.thebookseller.com/news/simon-schuster-talks-amazon.html

The guy posted the story on GoodEReader has some serious comprehension issues. Everything I have found, including the video link he posted, states Amazon is negotiating pricing contracts with S&S, not negotiating to buy them. He's emphatic Amazon's fixing to buy them outright.

ETA: Aha. Thanks, Sage.

He seems to have picked it up from Nate Hoffelder over at the Digital Reader, who is very clear he's blue-skying.

They could be in negotiations over KOLL or Kindle Unlimited involvement.

Just found this from Publishers' Weekly:

Terrible headline on that Good e-Reader article, and a lot of people not reading all the way through.
