CNN reports a 6.8 magnitude quake near Fukushima in Japan.

Tsunami warnings are in effect.

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake early Saturday struck offshore not far from Fukushima, Japan -- the epicenter of a nuclear crisis following a massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami -- the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

The same agency issued tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast in the region of Tohoku, as well as for coastal regions in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures following the quake.

We had a few while I was there. A couple were even shown on the news, but generally it was a meter or less, which isn't enough to actually cause damage in most places. It's a little scary, but they're to get people away from vulnerable areas even if the tsunami might be small. The trick is to see how large they expect the tsunami to be.

The tsunami was only 8 inches, so they canceled the warnings.

There are also huge effects from depth, distance and other factors. A 6.8 could be very serious, but in this case it wasn't.
