Did anyone eat fresh pistachios right after picking from the tree? Is the red fleshy hull edible?

I'm talking about this:

I'm no expert, but I don't think they're toxic, so they could be.

But if they are mature the shell should come right off, either shelled by hand or being banged around in a bag of some sort.

I know the hulls can be peeled off easily and I know the fresh seeds are edible. I wonder if the red hulls are edible too?

Because pistachios are actually not nuts, but fruits with seeds. So, like...plums or peaches.

They gave them shelled or unshelled pistachios, but they all ate only the kernels. But I'm not talking about the hard shells, but about the outermost soft hulls, which you virtually never see in the store, because they are peeled off right after harvesting. You can see them at some open fruit-vegetable markets in India...
