Can't say I've actually gone into the real world with my writing before, so hopefully this will bump my arrogance down a notch!

But, yeah, a teacher suggested I enter and so I went ahead and submitted one of my stories to the Anthology of Short Stories by Young Americans.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Time to test the water, folks!
Let's hope I don't drown.

Good luck, Akuma! Hope your story does get published. :)

But remember, one rejection (if you get one) won't drown you. If anything, it'll keep you afloat and raise your level of writing higher. What drowns the aspiring writer is not willing to accept honest constructive criticism on stories that don't get accepted.

But, in the meantime, enjoy the dip in the ocean. Sometimes it's a rocky ride but when you get one of your stories published, it's the most rewarding feeling in the world.

(PS Sorry about the overuse of a creative analogy. :D )

Good luck! I've got two short stories out there at the moment and so I know (sort of) how you feel :)

Let it bump your arrogance UP a notch. Now you've submitted, you've stopped being a wannabe and started being a writer. Expect rejections; they're part of the job, and rather than seeing them as a negative, see them as a validation of you as a writer.

And fingers crossed for an acceptance!

I assume you've been warned that many publications' response times are either a joke or wishful thinking, right?

Maryn, who once got a rejection six years later...

Six years later??! That must have been some slush pile....

Anyway. Akuma, that's terrific that you're getting your work out there. That's the biggest hurdle. After that first time, it gets a little easier to mail--or email--your mss. off.

Let us know how it goes!

Hey! I was going to enter this contest, but I thought the deadline was already past. I see now that it was extended. Awesome! If I can retype my story in time (my computer crashed) then I'll enter. This will be the first time I've entered also, except for the Poetry contest offered at the site. I don't really count that because I'm no poet, and I only entered it because we had to in English. Good luck!

Akuma and leftyjo, good luck to you both.

Several years ago, I subbed for the first time and the piece was accepted for an anthology. It does get easier after the first time. :)

oh scary parts! Here's a four-leaf-clover! *smile*

I wish there's something like that but less ethnocentric- I'm not american.

Good luck to both Akuma and leftyjo!

I also submitted a short piece of mine to a UK magazine, that was in March and I don't expect to hear from them anytime soon, or at all.

Aha! Cool.

I had a story in there last year, Issue 8.

Good luck.
Sorry for the late reply, and thanks. :) That's cool that you got published. How long did it take for them to get back to you? I'm not placing too much hope on my piece being published by Aesthetica, though.

Magazines take forever to respond; I just hate that, you know?
