Advice: Comma Usage

I'm not sure if the following is structured quite right:

This focus has greatly promoted my software development skills, especially my ability to develop algorithms and debug code.

Is the usage of the comma correct in this situation?

The comma is necessary.

The sentence will make a better impression, however, if it doesn't look so trendy. Too much "me" in it, and is promotion really what happens to skills?
