As far as I know, the word also can be placed wherever it suits you.

Also, Joe was there.
Joe also was there.
Joe was also there.
Joe was there also.

All correct, IMO--but with subtle differences in meaning, depending on context.

Wrong. Don't use it except in dialogue.

Joe also was there.
Grammatical but awkward.

Joe was also there.
Okay.

Joe was there also.
Okay.

(The choice between the last two depends on what you want to emphasize and the level of diction you're using.)

I have a hard time reading 'Joe was there also' out loud. It seems awkward, although it is also correct.
