Women in combat has been discussed before more than once in national discussions about our Armed Forces and I could not help but be curious if the AW community has ever gotten the chance to read some of the following perspectives on women in combat. I want to start by saying that with this thread I am not providing any kinds of opinions of my own on this topic to start with and and have decided to leave my own opinions on this topic unless specifically asked to do so by another AW member. My intent is only to offer some perspectives and see if any of it makes sense to anyone. Again, any of my own opinions on this are going to be kept to myself unless directly asked to share them.

First, there is a group of women in the Armed Forces sharing their views:

Perspectives of two men who think it is a genuinely good and long overdue idea:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...aeb140-bb50-11e3-9a05-c739f29ccb08_story.html

The perspectives of two women with pretty much the exact opposite viewpoints:

http://nation.time.com/2013/01/30/so-when-are-women-joining-the-nfl/

http://stevereichert.com/get-over-it-we-are-not-all-created-equal/

And a list of responses I got when I asked this question in an MMA forum that had numerous military vets this question: http://forums.sherdog.com/forums/f54/women-combat-where-do-sherdoggers-stand-2571815/index2.html

Some disclaimers: You will probably only have time to read a handful of the many responses and if you are able to read any of them, they are written by those posting in a forum centered on cage fighting and, like I said before, in some cases written by military vets. Ergo, if you decide to look at some of the perspectives in this thread, do be prepared to read comments that will come off as overly insensitive.

Very interesting!

I glanced through all of them and read the last two (from women against the opposing viewpoints) in full.

Everyone seemed to have a good point, but from the reading the last two... it seems like a lot of their opposition to the idea comes from women's bodies not being the same as a man's, and how the rigors of combat can have a greater effect on a woman's body than a man's.

That's a good point.

But I'd argue that so long as (1) the women in question are aware that they are at an increased risk and (2) it isn't getting in the way of them doing their jobs, that...

...well, that it's up to them at that point. If they want to do it or not. The points about it being more dangerous physically due to medical/health reasons are something that each woman should consider and base a decision on.

Now, if the issue of women all having problems carrying loads because they weigh 140 lbs instead of 240, and such a weight is causing spinal damage in almost all of them to the point that they lose agility in fire fights and might put others around them in danger... that's something to watch for medically and move them if it becomes an issue?

It's a tricky area. I'm on the side of "it's their choice, let them make it, but keep standards/requirements the same/similar."

Yeah, this can stay closed. First because it's already been done here in P&CE several times.

That's what the Search buttons are for.

Second because, yeah, that's not how P&CE works.

If YOU have a point of view, bring it. If you don't. Don't post stuff just to say "Look at me." Because we will, and you'll be gone.

eMax100 - Since PM's and a temp ban didn't work, let's try it "out loud." Read the stickies. Read the Newbie Guide. Don't come back until you do.
