View Full Version : Wake Up beginnings

A fellow in another thread was pondering using Wake Ups to begin a book/story. The gist of his note was that it is an amateur technique, but it can be done. I answered that it was used by Roger Zelazny to begin "Nine Princes in Amber", the first of the Amber Chronicles. Anything can work for a skilled author who understands what he is doing.

I thought it might be fun to offer our own "Wake Up" starters to applause or disdain. ;-) It can be sort of like the "first three sentences" thread except these will most likely go no further than this thread.

I'll be brave and start:

Something was wrong. How did I know? That was my own question, as I was trapped in that groggy state where it’s a coin flip whether I’m going to wake up or zonk back out. That place where you resolutely will your eyelids to open but they just won’t obey. I tried to. I failed. Then I knew the temperature had dropped drastically and my eyes popped open.
