My question is: What size should a book cover be for a)Kindle/ebook and b)paperback?

I've a feeling the answer is going to be akin to How long is a piece of string?

I was just considering playing about in Photoshop for those times when my muse isn't forth coming with words. Hoping I can distract the muse with graphics and snag the words while the muse isn't looking ;)

So, I guess a more accurate questions would be: What's a good size for a book cover for a)Kindle/ebooks and b)paperbacks?

It's not as subjective as you think. Look here for Kindle guidelines.

If you're planning on going to print at some point, you want to design the cover image at a 1.6 aspect ratio (5"x8") at printable dimensions. That's slightly longer than the octavo dimensions. Also design with at least .125" bleed when working in print resolution.

The actual wrap-around cover's dimensions will be affected by the the spine's width. You'll need a definite pagecount and to know paper thickness in order to figure it out.
