How often do you check your rep points? Do you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat wondering what people have said about you? Do you give a big "WOO HOO" whenever you get more points?

If so, this is the club for you...sporting its own clubhouse and comfy chairs. Come on in!! :D

Thanks Vince, although I sold my soul long ago for a corndog and two sodas. Love the pooch! What is (s)he? Looks like a boxer, but (s)he's so small! :)

Vince524

Her name is Molly. And yes, she's a boxer. 2 years old now, about 1 at the time, but she's on the small side. She was the runt of the litter. I've also got a Black Lab named Toby who is four and a Old English Bulldog who will turn 1 soon.

Maggie Maxwell

She's such a cutie! Well, I can say without a doubt that Mr. Maxwell would absolutely love to visit your house. That's, like, all of his favorite breeds. :D You have fabulous taste in doggies!

Yeah I guess you did. Back around June. She's a real pip. My wife has decided she likes her better than me. No one is surprised.
You can see pics of all the pups here (http://www.andreabuginsky.com/tag/vincent-morrone/)on a post I did for the book.

She's the little one alone, black with white on her face.

Freckles was the person who started the very first and original "Obsessive Reppers Thread"

According to their status, 'Freckles' hasn't posted since 2009 -- 2 full years before I joined AW.

Looks like we will never know who Freckles was ;)

Ummm... Hello? My name jerrimander and I'm new here. I have 62 rep pionts as of this post, and I check religiously for that number to rise. I'm thinking of celebrating when I get to 100. My question is, does it ever get easier? This compulsive checking?

Maggie Maxwell
05-05-2014, 07:34 AM
The checking, no. The speed at which the number of reps and points associated rises, yes. But the checking, you'll always be checking. Alwaaayyysss...

Maggie Maxwell
05-05-2014, 08:39 AM
Just move around as you're comfortable. It took me a week or two before I moved out of the newbie forum and into the great wide forum beyond, and almost a year later (good lord) I'm only JUST moving into other chat threads outside of the one I settled into (The Sci-Fi/Fantasy Cantina, currently The Cyborg Dragon's Den and Microbrewery. Drop by! We only bite a little, just to taste. :D)

Hiya! What are reps? And what are they for? And why would you guys check on them so much? *slinks back a little, realizing I ought to probably read about it somewhere* But sometimes, asking is just quicker. :)

jerrimander
05-05-2014, 09:25 AM
The little balance scales bottom left of every post? That's to award reputation points for posts and posters you like. Then to check on them, click on user cp, far left of the main banner. Sometimes you get little cheery notes to go with your points. The points don't really mean anything, or so I've read, but it's fun to get them and give them.

Night_Writer
05-05-2014, 10:06 AM
I've got a question about rep points too, and this looks like a good place to ask.

I remember in the past, like last year or so, it was possible to see how many points I had by hovering my mouse over a little icon on the lower left of any of my posts. In fact, it was possible to see anybody's points by doing that. I think it was, I'm not sure, the same little balance icon that we use to award the rep points. But I noticed that this doesn't work any more. I have to go to the User CP board if I want to see my points. And I can't see other people's at all. Which means no one can see mine, either.

Why did this change? I mean, what's the point of getting rep points if you can't show them off?

Hover your mouse riiiight under the P in "Posts" on the left, under someone's avatar. The text that says how many points someone has should pop up. It's not a specific number but text that tells what range they're in. You're "on a distiguished road."

Myrealana
05-05-2014, 06:19 PM
Why do we check them so much? So much?

Is several times a day so much? Is checking rep points the first thing before reading any posts or doing any searches each time you log on to AW so much?

OK, well, maybe...

05-09-2014, 05:29 PM
I'm doing not too bad, all considered, Vince. Thanks for asking. Just emotionally exhausted (gee, wonder why? Duh!) I'm headed back to work today and looking forward to having SOMETHING to do, y'know?

My mom's doing good too, FWIW. Apparently my dad was in MUCH worse shape than they let any of us kids know, so it's a relief from all that now. Last I saw her yesterday, she was compiling an ever-growing list of things to do, people/companies to contact, and all that--which is good. Keeping busy helps keep the mind active and the heart from aching too much, y'know?

Yeah, it's not working for me in Firefox at all. And if you click on the scales for a post you repped, you can see what you sent them. At least you could, I haven't checked that in over a year. And if you click on YOUR post, you can see what other people repped it, IIRC. Don't know if that still works or not.

Yeppers, for every 10K posts OR 10K reppies, your reppies are worth 1 more point. Everyone starts at 1, and gets more as they rep & post. Unless Mac decides to give (or take) more, of course.

I think my reppies are worth 5 or 6 at the moment. Susie's reppies are like 10 points, IIRC.

Vince524

Give it time, emax. :) Leave your own reps and people will sometimes respond. It goes slowly at first, but the more you post, participate, and leave your own reps, the faster it'll go up. It feels like and exponential curve, really.

You now have more than 29 reppies, most of them moving GIFs :D Hope that helps (and don't forget, once you get the first 20-25, the messages start to drop off the page and disappear - I found that out the hard way :( )

Well, last night was a night of little sleep--and for good reason.

The neighbor house (a duplex) across the street caught fire about 3:30 this morning. Nine fire trucks showed up with sirens blaring and lights blazing. One side of the duplex is rented by an older gentleman who keeps to himself, the other by an older invalid woman and her daughter (early 20's) who takes care of her. The daughter will often stop and chat and play with the dogs. So there was much watching to make certain there were no stretchers being carried out of the house, y'know?

Turns out the fire was in the shared basement storage area. Thoughts are that it was electrical in origin and the wall separating the houses is pretty much gone because the fire got into it. No lives were harmed, but the basement is pretty much gutted. They're still waiting to see if the support beams of the house (wooden) were compromised or not. If these folks have to move out, it's going to be a royal PITA since it's a HUD rental and they don't have much to live on, so I doubt they have any renter's insurance to cover such costs.

Having been through a house fire myself (1996), I can emphasize greatly with what they're going through. Not fun, but certainly does put lots of things into perspective, y'know?

Oh no! There was an apartment fire in our area last night as well. Apparently the fire department didn't get the hot spots put out when they came out so the fire started up again and burned down the whole unit of 8 apartments. :( What was crazy was that in the middle of the night DF woke up smelling something but I didn't, when we saw the news this morning we figured it had to be that he was smelling.

Yeah, it's a little freaky. We went out to dinner and stopped at the office supply store, and by the time we got back, the kitchen had caught fire. I put it like this, "The smoke was pouring out and the firemen were pouring in." It was very surreal, to be driving down the street and see the commotion, then suddenly realize it was MY house they were at, y'know?

Never found a place to put that into a story, but it's something that sticks in the memory.

Myrealana

Had a really good time. Next year, I'm bringing the kid and doing a costume.

Though, in spite of not having a costume, we did draw a few photo ops. My husband and I wore matching T-shirts that say "Never been kissed by Captain Jack Harkness." People would see one, chuckle, then see the other one, and laugh out loud.

Next year, I'm thinking a Green Lantern inspired 50's style dress, because he wants to be Steam Lantern.

Maggie Maxwell
06-17-2014, 07:48 PM
Haha, nice on the shirts and next year's Lanterns!

Kids' costumes are always the best part of a con to me. There's nothing like a little munchkin in a geeky costume. Last year at this one this weekend, there was a teeny tiny Thor beside us when a Loki walked by. The kid yelled, "LOKI!" and took off after him. The Loki totally played it up too and went running, just a little ways, not so far that Thor's dad couldn't keep up.

Year before that, this happened (http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/01/3e/d0/013ed085f46a51ec909dca1a80652c48.jpg) at a friend's booth. She'd hidden behind her daddy when Darth Revan showed up, but while we were talking to him and getting pictures, I noticed a green glow toddle out from behind the booth. Bravely bonked him right on the head.

These days?

There's two places where old acts go to die: The Granny Circuit and Vegas. Which one just depends on how many fans might be willing to pay more through the nose to see them. I happen to live in a town on the Granny Circuit and am constantly surprised to see what former-giant names are coming to Podunkville PA.( Even Weird Al was on it for several years, FWIW.) KISS probably isn't acceptable on the Granny Tour with the likes of the Drifters, Davy Jones and Richard Marx, y'know? ;)

One of the reasons why I love my name is because it's never been in fashion. It's one of those names that is pretty much universal, works perfectly both in English and Portuguese, and there are never too many of us.

It feels like, even with as many names as there are, especially now, that's bound to happen eventually. My name's Maggie. It's not exactly common. Even Margaret's out of date. And yet, my very first college class? Four of us. Four Maggies. I didn't even know three others my entire time growing up!

True, but try to convince 4 year old Me that. :D "Nuh uh I know a Sara and that's not how you spell it!" she says with her little arms crossed in stubborn defiance.

If this were the cabaret, I'd have a comment, but seeing as it's not...

:D

(And yes, it's a rolling rep-ban. You get it back as it expires, based on a 24 hr period between the first and the last rep over the span of, I think, 100 reps. So... keep repping, you'll keep hitting the ban.)

DeleyanLee

It takes 24 hours for each point to regen, so you can get one or three back and not have the rest back yet. It's very literal about that 24 hour period.

Makes you release just how many reppies you give out, don't it?

I may be... erm... more addicted to repping than being repped.

*sigh*

*twitchy fingers*

Just a couple of reppies, and then I'll be good. I promise..

But clearly not.

You know, for some reason, given the sensitivity of my touch screen, it's making repping on the iPad somewhat difficult. I have to touch it just so to get it to respond the way I want it to.

Have to save the serious stuff for when I get home, I guess.

I'd think there would have to be a way for you to get at it...

SaraP
08-15-2014, 12:15 AM
Dunno.

You know how you get the Notifications up top, for both PMs and VMs, and when you click on it, there's a pop-up menu? That won't appear either. So, I'm thinking it's really the way the phone works. It could simply be that my hand-me-down phone's older system just doesn't support the pop-up boxes.

So, I've had this cough that's been hanging on for two weeks. I really should go to the doctor, but I really, really don't want to.

I'm pretty sure it's viral. No fever or anything, so chances are, there isn't much a doctor can do, except tell me to drink fluids, rest (which isn't going to happen), and treat the cough so I can sleep at night (which Delsym does just fine.)

But my husband wants me to go to the doctor. I don't want to spend $90 to learn something I already know. Why is that wrong?

Maggie Maxwell
08-15-2014, 05:41 PM
If it doesn't go away soon, go to the doctor, but if you had a cold recently, it'll probably go away soon. I had a lingering cough after my last one, two weeks as well. Nothing like paying $25 just to be told, "Yep, it's a cough. As long as there's nothing in your lungs, it'll pass in a few days."

:Hug2: Get well soon.

SaraP
08-15-2014, 05:49 PM
Lots and lots of fluids, and if you don't want to keep using meds, you can try the trick I use on my kidlets: Vicks VapoRub on the soles of the feet, before bed, then cover feet in warm cotton socks. Works like a charm, though for the life of me I have no idea why.

Hope it clears up soon. :Hug2:

Could be walking pnemonia. Give it another week. Drink fluids, watch Star Trek and listen to KISS. Fell better.

DeleyanLee
08-15-2014, 10:21 PM
Having had walking pneumonia last March (and five times previous), it all depends on what type of cough it is whether or not you need to see a doctor.

If it's just a top-of-chest cough, then I wouldn't see a doctor unless it doesn't go away in another week or so.

If it's a deeper-chest cough, especially if it hurts after coughing, that's very likely either pneumonia or bronchitis and you should see a doctor to be certain.

If you're bringing up any phlegm, go to the doctor as soon as it isn't clear--yellow is bad and green will put you in the hospital. Any color means you need serious drugs.

Coughing has been related to allergies this year (I got that--GREAT fun) instead of runny eyes or nose or whatever. Totally new to me, but I took allergy medicine and it went away. Never happened before, but my doctor said there was a LOT of new cases for this kind of allergy reaction. It's another possibility, if it's not deep-chest coughing that you could try.

Hope that helps.

Well if there's no brown on the 'toast' then that means they're avoiding the cancer-risk that comes with charring foods ;) :D

Pfft.

They give you charcoal to counteract poison. Char is just charcoal. Plain and simple.

Besides, otherwise it's just bread, and not even very good bread at that. English muffins need to be toasted until they are brown. Nice and crispy and brown.

And then liberally spread with butter. Or cream cheese.

Proper bread actually tastes good untoasted.

English muffins, even the home-made kind.... really do not. I mean, they aren't bad, just... not good.

To be fair, a dragon's personal settings are "raw" or "well-done." There's no "lightly toasted." You get your bread bread or charcoal brick.
