Hi. My MC was a teenager in the 1940's and is older now. I need her to remember back to when she was a teenager. I was going to use a blood test as the reason she thought about when she was younger but I didn't know why a child from the 1940's would receive a blood test.

Flashbacks generally work best when the trigger relates to the memory. For instance, a woman seeing a horse and buggy on the side of the road might remember back to the time her boyfriend proposed to her in Central Park. Or she might recall her Amish childhood, but only if it specifically relates to a horse and buggy--like the time her father let her take the reins for the first time.

As for blood tests, I really don't know. Maybe a vaccination of some kind? Smallpox vaccines were pretty brutal back then, I believe.

Everything would be glass or paper. Paper cups coated with wax, glass needle cases, steel needles. No plastic. No disposable needles back then. They had to be wiped with alcohol before and after they were used and then the needle had to be sterilized and reused. Never sharpened. Those old needles hurt!

The main thing I remember about shots and doctors offices is the strong alcohol smell. That could trigger a memory. Nurses wore white starchy dresses complete with the starched cap. It was usually bobby pinned over their hair. They had pins on the caps giving their nursing degree. They wore white hose and white shoes--uniforms at all times. Never, never would a nurse be seen in slacks or scrubs.

No antibiotics. The doctor might have a pack of cigarettes in his pocket. Now these memories are from the early fifties but are pretty much the same as the forties when my mom was a kid. --s6 ps--dentists had a foot pedal to operate the drill!

I got vaccinated the old-fashioned way, with about a dozen pinpricks in the arm. So perhaps memory is triggered when she herself is being vaccinated, or a child is.

However, on second thought, that type of vaccination dates to the 1950's. Sorry.
