Would this phrase have been used in 1923? My story takes place in a small town in Michigan and the players are residents of the town. I'm wondering if they would say "break a leg" before going onto stage or something different.

Wiki says the earliest known example is from 1939. Did you google it?

Well, I knew if I posted my question here I would find my answer. With a bit of change to my search phrase I found a couple of sites that say that "break a leg" came into use in the 1920's, right after WWI. Sorry to have wasted posting space.
