I could be wrong but judging from several reputable magazines and websites, it seems like, in the professional arena, short stories are consistently of a higher quality than novels.
If I read professional grade short fiction in the mystery or romance genre it seems to be less formulaic than it's 30-50,000 word counterparts.
Is it because the sales demands within those genres are so high that consumers actually want the formulaic writing?
I don't have anything against those genres either. I think this kind of goes across all genres it's just more prevalent in those two - in my limited experience.
Just thinking out loud.
