My work-in-progress is set among Macau casinos.

I read somewhere that the Cantonese name for the Joker (the playing card, not the Batman villain) translates into English as 'The Devil King'. There was a prominent gangster in Macau who was known as The Devil King because he had drawn the Joker twice in consecutive hands in a game where they were wild cards.

I asked several Cantonese speakers that I know and they told me the card is just called 'Joker' in English (or Chinglish)

can anyone enlighten me?

Hmm.. poker cards in Cantonese?

English - Caantonese
Ace - Yeen 煙 / Yeen See 煙士 / Ace-see A士
King - King / Wong 王
Queen - Lui 女 (Girl / Female / Woman)
Jack - Jik 積 (Cantonese pronunciation of the word "Jack")
Two - Dee D (pair)/ Yee Chai 2仔 (little 2 (in this case)) / Leung deem 两点 (2 dots)
Joker - Dai Sai Guai 大細鬼 (Big Little Devil / Ghost / Trickster) / Dai Sai Fey 大細飛 (Big Little Flyer) / Joker / Guai Pai 鬼牌 (http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%AC%BC%E7%89%8C) (Devil Card)

If you want the suits / combos, I can provide the Cantonese pinyin as well. Let me know.
