I've done a bit of Google legwork to find book sales data, but what I specifically am looking for is bestselling fantasy and science fiction books by year. I did not find any such information in this forum (I hope not by oversight). Is this the right place to ask about that?
Also, to demonstrate my earnestness, here is the legwork:
The Amazon Bestseller list of 2013: http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers..._bs_tab_t_bsar
Here's the all-time New York Times bestseller list: http://www.nytbestsellerlist.com/book/bestselling No books in the last ten years on here.
Then here's the authors who end up there the most: http://www.nytbestsellerlist.com/authors/most-books
According to this article, there are not many lists of comprehensive book sales figures: http://asklib.hcl.harvard.edu/a.php?qid=50305
Nielsen Bookscan (https://authorcentral.amazon.com/gp/...icID=200580390) does give us a top-ten list, though: http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/top10s.html
That list seems to contain sales figures for the last six months. The list is as follows:
1) The Invention of Wings (historical fiction)
2) Silencing Eve (thriller / crime)
3) NYPD Red by James Patterson (mystery / crime)
4) First Love by James Patterson (women's fiction)
5) The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (literary? about an adolescence post-911, I think)
6) Marriage Between Friends by Debbie Macomber (Harlequinn romance)
7) Guilt by Jonathan Kellerman (mystery)
8) Big Sky Secrets by Linda Lael Miller (historical romance)
9) The Night Before by Lisa Jackson (romantic suspense)
10) Sycamore Row by John Grisham (thriller/ suspense)
