After wanting to start writing again for many years, I finally took the plunge and started a novel that my goal is to actually finish! I've tried before and always stopped because I hated what I had written. This one feels different. Started it last weekend and I'm only 2500 words or so in, plus a 3000 word general synopsis, but I have high hopes for this. I'm on my way!

Hello, Niki! Good luck on your writing goal.

I think I know exactly how you feel. I have so many unfinished half-novels on my laptop! I'm hoping to finish the one I'm currently working on as well. Believe in yourself- set daily goals- and you'll do well!

Awesome! I'm in the same boat. (I think a lot of us are!)

I've written every single day since I started my WIP about a week ago, and I'm not always in love with what I've written, but I refuse to quit! It might be the biggest hunk of crap ever composed by the hand of (wo)man by the time I finish, but it'll be finished! Then I can worry about turning it into something decent (or less horrible, at least). I'm totally using this WIP to learn. I'm already looking forward to revising it and making it better. But I have to finish it first!

Write a little every day. You'll get there!

Alright! Good luck with finishing. Stay on these boards and stay active. I find I struggle the most when I stop for a few days. Then it turns into a few weeks. Then a few months. Whatever you do, don't stop.

I have a trunk full of 50-page novels. They just didn't go anywhere. Actually, it was me who didn't go anywhere with them.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, I managed to get another 1000 words today, might do a little more tonight after I get home from work. I'm already seeing where I want to do major edits, but I'm forcing myself to not touch it until I get the first draft in. Otherwise I'm afraid I won't get the story down. I'll just keep trucking along in the meantime. :)

Good luck with your goal :). Don't give up. I once heard somewhere that a first draft is like a blank block of marble. It isn't until the second, third, fourth draft until you start to chip away at the material and uncover the masterpiece beneath :) So keep going, even if you're not particularly liking what you're writing in that moment of time.

Chipping away at the block of marble is a perfect analogy, I'll have to remember that one!

Managed another 1000 words for 2000 total today, and started chapter 3. Not bad considering the fact that I was at work all day today too!

Well done! If you can write after a full day of work you're doing well. Keep it up!

I can do some of my writing while I'm having downtime at work. Being the boss does have its perks! ;)

CGs on the good start! Make an unbreakable vow with yourself to finish this novel no matter how bad you think it is or how tired you may get of it. Developing that kind of perseverence is perhaps the single biggest step toward writing success.

Here's to completing a novel!

Best of luck to you. Sounds like you are well on the way. Noticed you are in Wisconsin and smiled to myself. I am in Minnesota, perfect weather to pound away at the keyboard.

Yes, snow and cold...think I'll stay inside today and get something accomplished ;)

Made my goal of 10,000 words by today. By next Sunday I'm aiming to be at 15,000. My goal is to do a minimum of 5000 a week until the story is done.

Great advice Phaeal! It took me a lot of years to finally make that commitment!
