I've been posting here a lot, but I promise that I'll quit doing it and start writing once I have enough info :P

That being said, I finally have a location!

The story I'm working on takes place in New York, 1894. The fictional town is located east of Boonville. The catalyst for the MC's quest is set off by the claims of Dingle Dangle Jones, who said he had found a large deposit of gold in a creek near Ice Cave Mountain.

I need more information to make the setup plausible.

1) Did anyone actually go to Ice Cave Mountain looking for the gold? If so, how many? Jones disappeared on a hunting trip and the assay results were never verified. By 1894, the Adriondacks were being marked as a protected area, so would this have affected prospectors?

2) Were there any settlements in the Adriondacks back then? Are they marked on any period maps?

3) What would be the best way to get to the mountain? Land or water? If water, which river? If land, were there any roads? How long would it take a party of six to get there?

4) Are there any period newspapers through which Jones made his claims? Do any pictures of him exist?

I'll post more as I think of them. You guys rock!

Alas, although I've spent time in the Adirondacks, I can't answer a single one of your questions.

You'd probably serve yourself well to get in touch with the Adirondack Museum and Library (http://www.adkmuseum.org/discover_and_learn/library_and_research/). It's possible they have someone on staff who'd swap emails with you, or lend you reference materials.

Maryn, who's hiked there a bit

I never heard of Dingle Dangle Before, but apparently no one went out to follow up at the time. http://nysgoldsite.com/HISTORY.html

You might try contacting the person who runs that site for maps, etc. There are old USGS topo maps avaiiable online for some places; google is your friend.
