View Full Version : Those ridiculously overused word?

Reading ones own work, we all run into those infernal doppelgangers, those sticky, madding and extremely overused words or even phrases that we somehow can't shake.

What are some of yours? :D

Some of the ones haunting me are:

Convulsing
Claw-like
Hollering
Urges
Illuminating

And I always tend to send characters walking down "Hallways" - something I try to catch asap I see it now.

(Edit: Damn, typo in Title) So sorry! Words - not word. XD

I don't recognize any of those as overused so maybe you write horror? :p

"Issues" drives me nuts. I have issues with it.

Issues is a dangerous one too. :D

Plus the more typical ones like: Stare and gaze.

Looked
Pondered
thought
began (a real killer)
Snapped (used in dialogue)
Saw
Remarked
Bleated
And
Likewise
Also
Appeared (as though)

The looks and some noises. My characters are all about the looks. I want to just punch them when they start in with any of the following:

smile
giggle
chuckle
groan
smirk
glare
gaze
nod
shrug

Oh, there are plenty more, but those are the ones that irk me right now.

I've forced myself to stop letting them do that shit by writing in red letters:

[paraphrasing]
This is NOT fking Twilight and no one's sparkling, so cut that shit out right now!

Helped a bit. At least no one's blinked yet.

Well, I'm allowed. It's the other voices that need to cut it out.

Even looking at this partial list makes me wanna hurl my computer against the wall.

Another pest is how my characters always second-think everything a lot:

Apparently
Seems
Probably

Make up your minds!

Echoed and re-echoed suddenly, just, that, over, up, down.

It's just that suddenly she just up and walked over to that door and down that hall going up to that guy's apartment and gave him a sudden dressing down over his screw-up. :D

Wait, that's a great idea. Making a sentence out of ones most over-used words!

"His claw-like fingers seemed to convulse, as they with no issue cut into the strange hallway wallpaper."No!" He hollered without reason."

^These come up a lot in my writing as well.
Also:
exhaling
inhaling
shakes head
looks up,
looks down,
grinning,
half smile,
gasp,
cringing,
scowling,
And the worse, in most of my drafts of this one story I've been working on for 8 years, 90% of the time every character was sighing and nodding! lol It's almost hilarious when I look back at it now.

Sighing and Gasping... The milk-chocolate of writing, it feels so good the instant it's written, but is so bad for you in the end. :D

A word cloud I created (http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/7417783/Draculesti) from my novel in progress (perhaps forever and always). Surprisingly, look and just are very small on the cloud, but no surprise my MC's name is the largest. I'm still in the process of editing so I can see from this cloud which other words I seem to use a lot and can try to eliminate.

These are words I associate with inactive action (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=238419). You know, when there are verbs on the page indicating the character is doing something but they're not really doing much of anything?

Would said muzzles also include whips? Chains? And stilettos?
I TOLD you NOT to attempt wearing 5 inch heels!
What, you think a manual's gonna suddenly give you skeels?
