My writing year in 2013 in review
It has been a hectic year on the writing front, with changes to publishers and writing to contract on several different fronts being the dominating points to mention. My 6 book deal with Darkfuse is well underway, with the first book, the novel THE HOLE being the highlight of the year in the sales stakes so far.
New or reissued Books included
- The Ravine (HC/TPB/eBook) Dark Regions Press
- The Quality of Mercy and other Stories (HC/TPB) Dark Renaissance
- The Hole (HC/TPB/eBook) Darkfuse
- Island Life (TPB / eBook) Gryphonwood Press
- The Midnight Eye Files: The Amulet (TPB) Seven Realms Publishing
- The Midnight Eye Files: The Sirens (TPB) Seven Realms Publishing
- The Midnight Eye Files: The Skin Game (TPB) Seven Realms Publishing
- Clockwork Dolls (novella) (HC/eBook) Darkfuse
The year also saw the rerelease of many of my ebooks with new publishers after the demise of Generation Next Publishing, a move from which my sales are slowly recovering.
I also made serious forays into the audiobook market this year, with The Midnight Eye series, The Watchers trilogy, Island Life, The Valley and The Invasion all now available in this format.
On the short story front it has been my best year of my career, with 15 sales to professional paying markets to the likes of NATURE Futures, Penumbra, Night Land in Japan and Red Squirrel in China. Alongside that I've have nice sales to anthologies with EDGE, CHAOSIUM and PRIME. I'll struggle to match it in 2014 given other commitments and deadlines on longer works, but I'll be basking in the glow of 2013 for a wee while longer yet.
2014 is shaping up to be another hectic year.
I've got a tentative schedule for forthcoming books:
- BROKEN SIGIL (novella, DARKFUSE) - Jan 2014
- SAMURAI and other Stories (Collection, Crystal Lake) - 25th Jan 2014
- THE KEW GROWTHS and other stories (themed Challenger collection, Dark Renaissance) - March 2014
- THE EXILED (novel, DARKFUSE) - July 2014
I'm also waiting for dates for ...
- BERSERKER and other cryptids ( a beastie collection, FRINGEWORKS)
- GENERATIONS (paperback release of my YA Giant ant book, FRINGEWORKS)
- THE MIDNIGHT EYE series (Portugese language edition)
Apart from all of that, I still have 2 novellas and a novel to write for DARKFUSE by the end of 2015, I'm working on some hush hush projects for other publishers that will see more luxury hardcovers in the future, and there are several high profile anthology appearances in the pipeline I'm quite excited about. All in all, I'm a busy wee lad as I head into my 22nd year of writing.
