I've never met her but I feel very sad about this. She was one of my favorite authors and I was hoping to meet her one day.

That really ruined my day. Her books are brilliant and I loved her just from the one interview I saw. Her Xenogenisis Books were really disturbing but I think my favourite is 'Clay's Ark' (I'm pretty sure that was one of hers anyway).

Mine too. Damn. She was just my age . . . WAY too early to drop off the twig.

That's so sad. . . I had to read a book by her in one of my classes last semester called Kindred. I liked it a lot, and I am hoping to read more of her books some day b/c I liked that one. . . not longer after I discover who she is, she dies. I hope she rests in peace.

No...just a changing of the guard: do not discount us.

But we do have rather imposing shoes to fill, don't we?

I just picked up a couple of her books after several recommendations (from people on AW and elsewhere). I was going to start reading one of them in a few days...RIP.

58 is *way* too young.

Octavia Butler Scolarship Fund

(It's actually a scholarship fund, but I have no clue as to how to change the header of this thread.)

From Publishers Lunch:

[size=-1]Warner, Seven Stories, Beacon Press, The Carl Brandon Society, Writers House, and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame have jointly created the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor the science fiction writer who died last month. The fund "will enable writers of color to attend one of the Clarion writing workshops where Ms. Butler got her start. It has been established to honor and affirm her legacy by providing the same opportunity and experience Ms. Butler had to future generations of emerging writers of color."

For more information, see CarlBrandon.org

I had just started reading Wild Seed (thanks to the people on AW) when I'd heard she died. Definitely a worthwhile undertaking.
