Hi, I'm a new member at AW, and a longtime lurker.

I've "come out" in the last few weeks. I'm an aspiring to be published novelist with some published short stories.

I've been seeing a lot about screenwriting and scriptwriting everywhere! Though I think I'll stick with novel writing.

But...I have a question, and wonder if any of you would be kind enough to enlighten me.

What is screenwriting in contrast to and/or compared to scriptwriting?

Thanks for your time. :)

Welcome, Josie. I've been around here for a while and am pleased to welcome you to the boards. This is a great online community.

I'm new to the scriptwriting boards myself, since I'm taking a break from noveling for a short 1-act i thought up.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Scriptwriting is the catch all name for writing anything from plays, TV, and film.

Screenwriting is what you call it when you are writing for film only.

Thanks for the welcome "Fallen Angel" Good Luck on the one act play.:D

And thanks "Royale" for the definition, it makes sense...

Well, I'm going to have to stay with novel writing and focus focus focus,
though I'm tempted to try scriptwriting for a graphic novel...a completely new field to me...no no no:Hammer:

Cheers, Josie

I associate screenwriting and screenplays with films.

Playwriting and plays with stage productions.

Teleplays with TV.

I guess they're all technically "scriptwriting" tho' lumping them together could be misleading. I'm just saying.

Hi Josie, welcome. Good luck with staying focused. :)
