The validity of a connection between dyslexia and creativity, not ignoring the negatives but also having unique abilities that make for good story telling has been actively discussed in another thread, "Myths about Success..."
http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=280147
but the dyslexia discussion was kind of a side track, though an active side track, so thought it should have its own thread.( hope this is the right place for it)
but just came across a documentary by Robert Redford's son James- on this exact topic- THE BIG PICTURE:RETHINKING DYSLEXIA

the film heavily features the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity and the brain imaging that was debated-

Trailer for the film can be seen here and rented for $3.99 download on Amazon

My review of the film on my movie blog can be seen here...

and its original site is here- http://thebigpicturemovie.com/

Nobody really understands dyslexia or creativity despite all the research in both, so there’s no absolute answer. But from what I’ve read, dyslexia seems to be some sort of brain dysfunction. While creativity is much more complex and has roots in both physiology and training.

This is just what was discussed in the "Myth about success" thread I linked to above-

But the "dyslexia" discussion was kind of a side track to the discussion of which was responsible for one's talent- "nurture or nature."

I wanted to start a new thread- on Dyslexia and Creativity- and a place to discuss the new information coming from places like Yale's Center for Dyslexia and Creativity- also linked above.

And really for $4 - rent the documentary or it also airs on HBO in December- linked above- it cover this stuff way better than I can- including a brain scan while they have a person do reading tasks and seeing dyslexic's brain light up differently.

The data in Pure and Applied Science is showing the "physiology" of the brain can give a person a dysfunction in learning how to read and write AND a talent in story telling and writing at the same time.

Another good book on the subject....

MY DYSLEXIA, by Philip Schultz, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2008
Schultz didn't realize he had the disability until his son was diagnosed. It is a short fast read- about him looking back through his life and struggles and realizing how much dyslexia had affected him in the best ways and the worst ways.
