Lyrics that move you...

I think writing lyrics is the hardest thing, especially if you try to put them to music. But there are lots of great songs.

This is a Christian forum and this question is directed solely at Christians. What song lyrics move you? They can be Christian songs they might not be. I've found that sometimes some of the most powerful songs can be be non-Christian but you can imagine God singing it or it seems to represent how you feel in your walk, etc...

So here's a place to post song lyrics that have moved you, mean something to you, stir your heart, etc... It can be one or two lines, it can be an entire song. You decide on that.

Some that have moved me are...

Rich Mullins:
Well sometimes my life just don't make sense at all
When the mountains look so big
And my faith just seems so small
So hold me Jesus, 'cause I'm shaking like a leaf
You have been king of my glory
Won't you be my prince of peace?

And I wake up in the night and feel the dark
It's so hot inside my soul
I swear there must be blisters on my heart
So hold me Jesus, 'cause I'm shaking like a leaf
You have been king of my glory
Won't you be my prince of peace?

Surrender don't come natural to me
I'd rather fight you for something I don't really want
Thank to take what you give that I need.
And I've beat my head against so many walls
Now I'm falling down
I'm falling on my knees

Bebo Norman:
Sometimes at night when I am afraid
I cover my eyes, I cover my shame
So here in the dark, broken apart
Come with your light and fill up my heart

Oh great light of the world fill up my soul
I'll never mend here so come make me whole
Oh great light of the world come to impart
The light of your grace to fill up my heart

(And before anyone argues with me that it's not supposed to be "I'll never mend here," that is how we sing it in church. I like it way better than "I'm half a man here.")

Bebo Norman, "Nothing Without You" (excerpt):

Take my body and build it up
May it be broken as an offering of love
For I have nothing, I have nothing without You

All my soul needs
Is all Your love to cover me
So all the world will see
But I love You

With all my heart
With all my soul
With all my mind
And all the strength I can find

All my soul needs
Is all Your love to cover me
So all the world will see
I have nothing

Take my time here on earth
And let it glorify all that You are worth
For I am nothing, I am nothing, I am nothing without You

FFH :One of These Days (chorus):

One of these days
Gonna see the hand that took the nails from me
One of these days
Gonna hold the key to the mansion built for me
One of these days
Gonna walk the streets of gold that were paved for me
One of these days
I’m gonna see my Savior face to face
One of these days

Newsong, "Arise, My Love" (excerpt):

Not a word was heard
at the tomb that day.
Just shuffling of soldiers feet
as they guarded the grave.
One day, two days,
three days had passed.
Could it be that Jesus
breathed His last?

Could it be that His Father
had forsaken him?
Turned his back on his son
dispising our sin.
All hell seemed to whisper
"Just forget Him, He's dead."
Then the Father looked down
to his son and he said..

Arise, My love.
Arise, My love.
The grave no longer
has a hold on you
No more death's sting
No more suffering
Arise...Arise...my love.

I have to say that without the music, they're not as powerful for me. Especially "Arise, My Love" -- that gives me goosebumps every time.

BADLANDS - In A Dream (Ray Gillen)

When I'm down and feeling low
And confusion has touched my soul
How I need some place where I can hide away

Let me fall within your arms
Melt away this cold I feel
All I need is to hold you tonight

Hold me close when I'm cold
Let me hear your beating heart
Close my eyes far away in a dream

In the morning I wake
And I'm blessed by God's grace
Just to open my eyes to see your face

Hold you tonight, sweet child
Never let me go
Tell me everything, oh, will be alright

In the morning I wake
And I'm blessed by God's grace
Just to open my eyes to see your face
Just to open my eyes to see your face

Love and Hugs,
Heather

I can't keep my promise; I will love him, and honour him, and cherish him, forever.

I love Newsong and "Arise My Love" is an awesome song.

Here's a Newsong song that moves me...
I was dreamin', about Heaven
Dreamed I was standing at the pearly gates
We were all there, and I was so scared
In the presence of one so great
I felt so very unworthy
I felt like running away
I bowed my head and I turned to go
When I heard someone say...

"Father, this one's with me
Part of the family
One of the reasons I died on Calvary
Father, welcome him in
I paid the price for him
Father, oh Father, this one's with me."

I was dreamin', about Heaven
When I looked up the gates were open wide
And in the distance, I saw Jesus
Our eyes met and I began to cry

Todd Agnew:
It's cold outside
Or is that just the chill I feel inside from standing here
Steeping in my shame
I can't deny
I'm surrounded by the very thing You freed me from
That's why I can't come home

And I dont' know where I turned around
From chasing what I always found
Completed me, more than I could dream
And I don't know why I can't remain
Safe here where I always came to meet with You
You always met with me
And You're still here waiting

I fail to see
Why you would still be waiting to forgive me
After all that I have done
But I cannot say
That one time I red and You had turned away
Your love never fails

And I don't know where I turned around
From chasing what I always found
Completed me, more than I could dream
And I don't know why I can't remain
Safe here where I always came to meet with You
You always met with me
And You're still here waiting

It's cold outside
Or is that just the chill I feel inside
From standing here
Steeping in my shame
I can't deny
I'm surrounded by the very thing You freed me from
That's why I can't... come home...

Copyright Issues

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket in regard to this topic, but I do think that as Christians we are asked to be especially respectful of other's rights and the law.

Posting lyrics on this forum is a form of copyright infringement. We don't have the right to "pass on" other peoples published words without their permission. This is not covered by the "personal use" law because we are sharing them with others. If you print so much as one line of a song in a book, you must get permission - and that applies whether you get paid for that work or not.

My husband gladly shares his lyrics with anyone who asks permission but it bothers him a great deal when people use groups, lists, and forums to share his lyrics with out his permission. Oft times the words change slightly or are taken out of context. By asking permission he can (somewhat) control a few things. He sees that his words are printed in such a way that they do not tear down someone else. He can be assured that his Christian witness is exactly what it is -- not built into something greater or washed out into somthing less than it is. He can also make sure that the words continue to glorify Christ and are not used in conjunctions with something that does not reflect his beliefs.

I ask for the same respect in regard to words taken from my books.

Please consider what I've said. No offense is meant, I'm simply asking you all to please reconsider printing lyrics on this forum.

No, this thread shouldn't need to be deleted.

If the idea of printing lyrics (widely available on the internet) bothers you, just post the link to them. I don't mean to sound contrary, but I'm thinking the songs in discussion here are commercially available. Posting lyrics isn't like pirating a song, IMO.

(Gee, I'd think an artist would think that would be great--it might cause someone to buy their music!)

Lyrics are printed everywhere on the internet. Go to google and type in a few lyrics to a song you like with hyphens in-between instead of spaces and you'll get plenty of hits.

By reposting them here...

1. No one is making a profit
2. It's not being used commercially
3. Lyrics aren't being used out of context
4. And so far I see credit being given for the most part to whoever performed the song - no one is claiming lyrics to be their own.

If anything it's possible that someone may read lyrics, like them, and make a point of going out and buying the CD to hear that song.

You know in school when you write an essay, you're allowed to write word for word what someone else has said or written so long as you give them credit and don't plagarize. And so long as you're not getting paid for your essay, you don't have to worry about paying copyright fees or anything like that. I don't see how this is any different.

I meant for this to be an uplifting thread, nothing more or less.

There's a song we sang a lot at church camp when I was a kid, I don't know who wrote or performed it.

You're my brother, you're my sister
So take me by the hand
Together we will work until He comes
There's no foe that can defeat us
When we're walking side by side
As long as there is love
We will stand

Another camp song...

Give thanks with a greatful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given
Jesus Christ, His son
And now let the weak say I am strong
Let the poor say I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us
Give thanks

East to Wests' "Hope for a Broken Heart."

Every weary brother
Every wayward son
Lost and lonely daughter
Everyone
Foolish or forgotten
Feeling left behind
Anyone who comes to Him can find

A companion for the lonely
There's a lifeline for the lost
Desperate souls who are drowning in the dark
There's hope for a broken heart

Hearts that have been wounded
Believing every lie
Come to see things in a different light
Feel the winds of freedom
Blowing tenderly
For everyone who finds Him He will be

A companion for the lonely
There's a lifeline for the lost
Desperate souls who are drowning in the dark
There's hope for a broken heart

How do I know that He will never leave me
How do I know that He'll pull me through
How do I know, I know
I've seen it time and time and time again
He's always been

A companion for the lonely
There's a lifeline for the lost
Desperate souls who are drowning in the dark
There's hope for a broken heart
