I know a lot of people say that Citizen Kane is the most important film because of what it established, but I find myself disagreeing on choosing the single most important film. I think it is just one piece of the bigger picture, and other films are just as important in establishing new techniques and developing a language for film.

So what do you think? Can we truly pinpoint the single most important film?

I don't think there is one "most important film," no. I do think there are most important films for certain milestones:

Most important film of X era.
Most important film about women and women's rights (or civil rights, gay rights, etc.)

I'd have a hard time picking just one BIG most important film ever.

The Jazz Singer - ushered in Talkies.
Funny Girl - ushered in Barbra Streisand.
Sons of Katie Elder - just cause.
Now You See Me - last movie I saw.
