You realise that the question you are asking has such a HUGE answer that it's simply not possible to answer it in one post, or even one website.

I suggest you set aside an afternoon with Mr Google and a lot of coffee if you want real life examples.

Most people will have some story, either their own or from a family/friend/colleague/etc

Can you be a bit more specific about what exactly you are looking for?

You're writing Fantasy. Fantasize.

caw

That.

Active imagination + old house settling = "haunted sighting" a lot of the time.
And plenty of others are hoaxes.

It's all in how you structure your world. A premonition could be a non specific bad feeling, instinct taken further, or a specific image or a very clear full vision of a nasty event.

There are plenty of "haunted houses" out there. Look up some famous ones - The Amityville Horror house is close to where I live.

I'd consider waiting until after the Halloween season to do this research because right now you'll get all of the Halloween attractions.

What kind of paranormal creature interests you?

You could watch Ghost Hunters on TV or tons of classic TV shows and films to see what others have done.

Use your imagination. Create your world.

Real haunting "events" aren't over the top.

You find a snapshot of a dead loved one on the floor beside your bed the morning after you have a vivid dream about that very person. Say, for example, it is a picture of your long dead grandfather on a vacation to Colorado Springs back when you were a kid.

You are very sure that the picture was in a desk drawer in the living room. You go to the desk and the thing is locked. You open the desk and the drawer does have the other pictures from that trip. Your hands are a little shaky as you lock the picture back into the desk. You live alone and have no memory of getting into that desk drawer or even of seeing that picture for years.

By the time the tea kettle whistles your heart has slowed down its Ginger Baker beat. You wonder if maybe you missed the picture last night when you went to bed--although it was right next to your shoes and the book you were reading. You dismiss that theory before you finish your tea and toast but now the sun is up. Things aren't so scary.

In the shower you decide that you must have dropped that picture months ago. It was kicked under the bed until your roomie--a cat--drug it out last night. Possible with your level of housekeeping.

You are a born again skeptic as you step out of the shower and then you notice the calendar: September 4th--Grandpa's birthday.

Stuff like that. --s6
