On Wednesday morning, I gave a taped interview at a Los Angeles radio station. When the interview opportunity was first offered to me, I was thrilled and jumped at the chance to promote my book. I picked the first available date and time, though, because I knew as the days wore on, I'd become progressively more nervous.

My friends online (and off) gave advice and encouragement. I am not one who likes to get in front of crowds, and my biggest fear was that as soon as the engineer hit "record," everything would leave my head. (It didn't.)

The one bit of advice that really helped was: Think of the interview as a conversation. The host is your mate and you're sitting across the table having a beer. That's what I held onto that morning on the drive into the studio: It's just a conversation.

After being ushered into a small mixing studio, I chatted for a couple of minutes with the sound engineer. The host walked in and introduced himself. He was very professional and businesslike, as if he's done it a million times (which he has). I tried to keep my "ums" to a minimum and tried to roll with his questions, which weren't quite what I'd expected. The whole thing was over in about ten minutes, and I didn't fall over and die. My nerves were actually not bad.

I forgot to ask about the air date. I have a feeling they'll just insert it somewhere when they have the time. But that's okay. I really don't need to hear it again.

The main thing is I did it. :tongue

Great news for you! Also good advice on how to take something head on.

Thank you, Canton. It seems that some of life's challenges I meet with a bit of an inner struggle first, but I think most of us are stronger than we give ourselves credit for. :)

Make sure to let us know if the station posts a podcast on their web site...

Thank you, gypsyscarlett! I don't know why doing things like this are so tough for me. Hopefully if an opportunity like this comes up again, I'll be a bit more relaxed about it. (Yeah, right.) ;)

Congrats! :) I remember my first radio interview. It was on NPR and I was extremely nervous. Thankfully the host really was interested in the topic, so it felt like a conversation. Make sure you link to the podcast version on this thread when it becomes available so people here can listen. That usually happens a few months after it's aired.

Cathy, that must have helped knowing that the host was interested in what you had to say. I didn't quite have the same feeling. (Not so warm and fuzzy.) ;)

Hopefully I will have a link to post some day. :)

CGs! I love radio interviews with writers. One of my biggest dreams is to be featured on Fresh Air and On Point. Not necessarily on the same day.
