Which is funniest a school bus, a garbage truck, or a funeral procession?

In my cozy a transit-bus driver is telling a story about a bet that he lost. He had made the line-up at Chesapeake Crossing Mall every day and one day even bet the passengers that he would make it. Everything was going fine, until he got caught behind a school bus. Or, until he got caught behind a garbage truck. Or, until he got caught behind a funeral procession.

Which is funniest?

Thank you,

Ed

Planning to write is not writing. Outlining, researching, talking to people about what you're doing, none of that is writing. Writing is writing.

Hey Ed,

How about a snow removal vehicle? Or a farm tractor? Or you could have a taxi driver that follows the speed limits.
I guess funny really depends on the scenario. Hey the snow removal may be funnier if your story takes place where there's no snow or it's summer time :)

Is he writing a fantasy? :tongue

As for which is the funniest, when I read your post, I don't think any of them are actually funny, because I don't have the context of the story, and as smelling salts pointed out, funny depends on the scenario. If you give us a paragraph or two (you can post in Share Your Work and put a link to it here, if you don't want to post it on the open board), perhaps we can help you better.

As it was said - it depends! You could embellish the funeral procession and make it the funeral for someone who was hit by a speeding bus! Or make the funeral for the guy who put up the traffic signs - and he died while placing one last sign. Or maybe he gets stuck behind a protest march - people who want slower traffic on that stretch of the road.

Hmmm I could really get into this - too bad I don't feel the same about my own WIP.

I think you've hit on the main problem with humor. It is very subjective. I have to agree here, what makes any of the vehicles funny is the set-up and the situation. Any of them can be funny or none of them can be. My best advice to you, since it sounds like a relatively small passage to write, try each one, then see which you like better. Or brainstorm for something over-the-top.

Poultry truck wrecked in the road with chickens everywhere... taxidermist's delivery van lost a load of stuffed buffalo... or History museum/dinosaur bones.

It looks like you're going to have a joke after whichever one you pick....

I vote garbage truck. I think you could come up with a few scenarios and keep it in the 'cozy' atmosphere. Hearse might take you somewhere you don't want to go; ditto with the school bus.

Just my .02+tax

An overflowing garbage truck might work. Or...

A school bus convereted into a hunting camper, eight-foot twin cb antennas on the side mirrors, with a drunken would-be viking at the wheel and a co-pilot dressed like Daniel Boone.

(I've seen it. It was funny. It was even funnier when the State Police arrived. It was down-right hilarious when the would-be viking's wife hit him with a fireplace shovel. Maybe you just had to be there.)

Hands down, the funniest thing I've ever seen on the highway is a flipped Ore Ida truck. A gazillion pounds of frozen potatoes on the asphalt. It looked like every driver in the county stopped in the middle of the road trying to pilfer spilled spuds. You would have thought a Wells Fargo armored car had just delivered the mother lode. (The driver was fine, if a little bewildered.)

Thank you guys, you've given me so much to think about. I was stuck thinking of real events here, who knows what my imagination can come up with.

I do like the old lady in the Hummer, though.

Thanks,
Ed

Ha! I know the answer!

He got stuck behind a transport with the Crispy Creme logo all over it! (If you were in Canada, it would be a Tim Horton's truck.)

Or the funeral of a guy who died of a heart attack from too much donuts and coffee.

Or the garbage truck, stopped to pick up somebody's trash, which turned out to be donut boxes and coffee cups.

Somehow, you should work the coffee and donuts into the bus driver's downfall.

Just my two cents.

A school bus gives you a container full of children who always make faces at you, or they moon you through the bus rear window (I have had it happen to me), make obscene gestures, even make-out to extrmemes on the last seat in the bus.

A garbage truck could be fun - overflowing bits of gross objects like body parts falling on the vehicle behind, or having it lurch forward while the garbage spills all over you ( been there also).

A hearse is usually at the very front of the procession, right behind the escort police vehicle, leaving little to play with other than the procession of cars. In most places other traffic is stopped for the funeral procession to pass, or move safely through intersections.

How about having him get behind an Amish buggy pulled by a drunken horse?
