I know an agent, and I "happened" to mention my now finished book to them this morning. They said to send the first three chapters over and they'd have a look for me.

Now I l know that is not an offer of representation, nor is it even good feedback, but it feels like a huge milestone for me.

And the title is a lie. It is Christopher Little.

Well I've sent it. I spent the weekend formatting, reformatting and formatting again. Editing, polishing, reading, re-reading and editing once more before finally just sending the damn thing.

Now to spend a week checking my email every five minutes.

Sadly he doesn't want it.

On the plus side he sent me a personalised reply in only four days explaining that he liked the premise and the main character, but didn't feel enthusiastic about a number of specific details in the opening. He also told me I should probably send it to other agents. He even apologised for not being enthusiastic.

It's a shame, but I never really believed he'd want it and so can't really see this as anything but positive.

Onwards and upwards!

Boo. At least he was quick to respond, forthright and encouraging. You can't ask for a better rejection than that.

Sorry it wasn't the reply you wanted, but it's still pretty cool to have that connection - plus, rejection. Nothing makes you more like a pro...

Well it seems I may have jumped the gun a little. Today he told me that there were a few minor points that could easily be fixed, explained exactly what they were, told me I was a natural writer, an extremely good storyteller and have a unique voice (exact quotes). And that I was to send it to him again , and also to send more.

So obviously I'm deleriously happy to have such fantastic feedback from someone like him, but I'm a bit puzzled by the situation. It certainly isn't how I envisaged the process of finding an agent!

So back to the manuscript...

That's fantastic - time to knuckle down for some revision!

Good luck and do keep us posted.

Nerve wracking indeed, and now you have to let us all know how it goes...

Revisions made, edited again, nervousness conquered, and first seven chapters sent.

Now for the wait.
