I'm thinking of establishing a ZAZZLE store and creating a line of sticky notepads (like Post-Its) using some original sayings.

For example:

Lavern Sez: PERVERT!

Lavern Sez: Shut-up and Sit down!

I found the "perfect" little pic in Microsoft Word's collection of clipart that I'd like to use as my icon/character.

Is it ok to use it since it's in the public domain or is it copyright protected and I need permission to use it for profit?

I believe the deal with clipart is it is okay to use for anything at all. At least, in pre-cyber days that was the case.

Clipart is (essentially) public domain. It's so generic or so widely used that there's no real holder of copyright to that image.

OK,

I woke up in the middle of the night with seven, yes 7, new ideas for my line of sticky notes.

*Not sure where this is going, but I'm getting kinda excited about it* :e2cloud9:

I hope this is one of them. I'd buy that. :)

Actually, that statement was just me thinking out loud...

But now that you both like it, I just might use it. ;)

AW. A very nice place!
... when it comes to copyright, take nothing for granted.
There's a MS Office FAQ somewhere regarding copyright of clipart.
Some clipart is not for commercial use, from what I recall.

This should steer you towards what is and isn't allowed:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intellectualproperty/Permissions/default.aspx

link on the btm to clipart

G'luck !

ps What's the origin of this one > Lavern Sez: PERVERT!
Kinda curious.

Yeah, I've done some research and from what I saw re: Microsoft clipart copyright, it appears as though one cannot use the clipart on "products meant for sale, etc." :(

So it's back to the drawing board (no pun intended) in my search for a logo/icon/character to represent my product.

Kinda curious.

Those who know me well, know that I call just about anyone who:

A. Does not eat Grits or Attend Church on Sundays

B. Makes even the slightest sexual remark, innuendo, or reference

... a PERVERT!

(Sometimes HEATHEN and sometimes both) :tongue

That's too bad. One would think it would be okay to 'borrow' a few things from a company that has made all their money from 'borrowing' things from other other people. That sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

That pretty much covers every single member of the forum.
