I forgot to slip in the SASE

Yesterday, I went down to the post office and bought two pre-stamped envelopes. I neatly wrote out my address and the agent's address on the two envelopes. I folded up my letter, stuck it into the envelope, and handed it over to the postal worker.

Today, folded up with the post office receipt, I find the SASE. Damn it!

Do I resend the query letter with the SASE? Or, do I just charge it to the game and consider it an automatic rejection?

You got nothing to lose by resending with a sticky attached as mentioned above...

All that will happen is you won't get your material returned, or a notification of a rejection. If they like your submission you'll probably hear from them.

A few only accept paper queries. I think it is their way to weed out those who query everyone.

Accepting paper-only queries does cut down the number received, but it also causes storage problems. Even a paper slush-pile can be vast.

Would an error such as this give the agent or editor the impression that the author cannot follow basic instructions? I should hope not, but there are some picky people out there.

There are some picky people out there, and some of them are editors and agents.

It might make them think you pay no attention to detail, and refuse to follow basic instructions; but then again, it might not. Even picky people recognise that we sometimes make mistakes.
