From PW today:

Penguin Young Readers Group's latest debut author is also one of its target readers: a 13-year-old boy. The division's Grosset & Dunlap imprint has inked Jake Marcionette to a two-book, North American rights deal for his middle grade series, Just Jake. The first book in the series, about a sixth grader trying to establish his social life at a new school, is set for February 2014.

Always nice to see that it really IS about the book. Young AW writers, be of good cheer. Let your hearts warm and keep on writing! :D

And my Life just got more depressing :P but for real Congrats Jake! I don't even have one, so this is a great accomplishment.

That sounds neat. Seen from a true firsthand perspective. I wonder if it started as a school assignment that blossomed?

Wow! That's super impressive. And super ego crushing. That's what I was going to say! :D Good for Jake; may he have a long, successful happy career in writing (and other stuff too, if that's what he wants. Heck, he's only 13; his dreams may change. May he be able to explore them all!)

And for all the other teen authors, this is why you don't send your work to a vanity publisher first.

Every now and then, we get a teenager in here asking if they're too young to be taken seriously by a publisher. We can point him/er to this.

At a conference, I met a 13 year old who wrote excellent, creative science fiction. He was stricken by the same reluctant to put his work forward. That was two years go. I hope he's done something with it.

... cool with a capital K.
Congrats to the lad.

And I'll tell you.

When I was 13 myself, it would've been neat
to read a book by a boy my age. Probably a lot
more approachable than some of the stuffy stuff
adults write for kids, containing "edifying lessons."
