View Full Version : Best writing conferences out there?

So I signed up for my first writers conference this September in Chicago. I'm wondering if there are any particularly good conferences in other parts of the country? I'm eager to attend the Chicago one, but I'm wondering if there are larger ones that might open up writers to more agents, pitching opportunities, etc.

General purpose ones, or specific genre ones? What do you write?

The first completed draft I have is more commercial/speculative fiction, and the novel I'm working on now is more science fiction. I would at least like to see a solid general interest conference over specialized genres.

For a general conference, I highly recommend the Pacific Northwest Writer's Conference, held in the Seattle area every summer. Another good one I attended two or three times in years past was the Writers At Work Conference in Salt Lake City.

I found a pretty good list (http://www.andreabrownlit.com/writing.php) on agent Andrea Brown's website. Unfortunately, 2013 was the last of one of the best ones out there, Backspace, in NYC. Pity. I'd always meant to go to that one.

Genre conferences are a little easier to find. Here's a pretty comprehensive list of Science Fiction/Fantasy ones (http://www.locusmag.com/Resources/Conventions.html)
