Hey all, this is probably a super-naive question but I'm willing to sacrifice a little pride in exchange for knowledge. ;)

I'm an author, planning to self-pub, and I'll soon be looking for a cover artist/designer. In that arrangement, which party normally presents the contract?

I realize there may be some negotiation before we arrive at the final contract. But initially, should I draw one up myself that covers the rights I want, or would the artist/designer be more likely to bring the first version to the table?

I don't want to waste time drawing up my own contract if that's redundant effort, but I also don't want to come to the table empty-handed and look like a clueless idiot.

A professional artist might have a contract that they use, but a lot of them do not. You should put a contract together to have on hand. Be sure to spell out:
  • when payments will be made, and what % of the total they are
  • final due date
  • delivery format and resolution
  • what rights the artist retains to the piece

Thanks!

(Somehow I wasn't subscribed to my own thread, so I missed this. Blerf.)
