Yesterday I noticed an ad at the top of AW for the Salt Cay Writers Retreat in the Bahamas this October.

http://saltcaywritersretreat.com

Registration opened mid-March and attendance is limited to 65.

Early registration is just $3450 USD. Miss the deadline and tack on another $500. Prices do not include hotel or transportation.

According to their website:

Tuition fees include 6 days of workshops and individual instruction on Salt Cay; transportation every day between the Comfort Suites hotel and the island; lunch on the island Monday-Saturday; dolphin swim workshop and sea lion encounter; Sunday evening sunset dinner cruise; Saturday evening island feast, and 2 other dinners for a total of 4 evening meals. 3 free evenings allow registrants time to write, swim, relax, or explore nearby Atlantis Resort & Casino or Nassau.

And includes:

*** Individualized instruction from bestselling authors, top editors, and literary agents,
*** Evening gatherings with student and author readings,
*** Free or deeply discounted activities for families, including water park, water bikes, kayaks, dolphin and sea lion encounters, snorkeling, scuba-diving, and much more

Oh my. I've only been to a few local conferences, but none have sounded like this! Swim with dolphins and sea lions! A sunset cruise of Nassau harbor! An authentic Bahamian feast at the closing festivities!

I texted my husband that I was going to the Bahamas for this. His response was "Ha Ha Ha Ha." Doesn't that sound like he's really happy for me that I found this opportunity? ;)

I would so go to this - if I had a spare $5000. Hey, it's a tax write-off, no? Alas, I will miss it this year.

Have you ever gone to a posh writers' conference in a far-away place?

If I had five grand spare, the last thing I'd do is something like this. I can see the conversation between my wife and me now.

Me: "I'm going on a writers' retreat in the Bahamas."

Wife: "What's a writers' retreat?"

Me: "The idea is a load of writers go away and get some work done. Then they critique each other's stuff. But instead of that, I'll be pissing about with some dolphins while maybe talking about writing in between drinking too much and working on my tan. Oh, and it costs five grand."

Wife: "I want a divorce."

I'm going to a retreat/workshop this summer. Only it's one I can drive to and costs a fraction as much. No dolphins, but the chance to interact with some awesome writers.

If you've got the money and vacation time and want to do it, why not? That is, if you don't have spouse or kids to worry about.

But I'm guessing there are probably better uses for $5k.

Sounds way too exciting to me. I think I'll stick to reading my own novel on my Nook with my feet up.

For $5000, I could refurnish my home office and have a permanent writer's retreat.

Sorry, Bahamas.

... so it's a tax-deductible holiday in the Bahamas?

Yes! All rooms at the hotel are suites and they encourage us to bring a friend or spouse. So maybe that would cut down on the grumbling from the other half.

What I want to know is, how do the writers/agents leading the workshops get a gig like this? For them, it's a FREE holiday week.
