I don't need a lawyer ( I hope) but I do want to write a scene in which a character hears his conviction maybe quashed. Does anyone know how such news would be delivered? Is there a UK resource for writers wanting to know how appeals etc work in practise? New to the genre as you may have guessed. Cheers.

Probably the solicitor would visit the appellant in prison if they had any news to impart. I strongly recommend the CPS website. It's full of useful stuff.

The appellant would be present in court during the appeal and to hear the judges' verdict.

You could try contacting a local University. Where I work there's a "free law" society where students give out free legal advice.
