I've started submitting to the U.S. market. It's been a big change from the teeny Canadian market but unfortunately I'm not actually familiar with the agencies and people. I'm looking at the online sites like querytracker, but the agents look the same. Which guide can anyone recommend that will help me narrow my search? My genre is historical fiction (with literary apppeal). Much thanks.

Check agency websites (almost every reputable US agency has one). It's a good way to learn what each agent likes and dislikes.

The 'Bewares' forum on here is also a great resource.

Sat Nam! (literally "Truth Name"--a Sikh greeting)

www.agentquery.com (http://www.agentquery.com)

Preditors and Editors (google it, it will come right up) has lists marked with who's recommended and who isn't.

The Bewares list here.

Writers Digest has a blog with interviews with agents.

Check the agents' websites.

Google likely agents' names and see what you come up with. There are some interesting interviews out there.

Etc.
