Twitter is lighting up about this.

It could be one giant database glitch, or a strategic move, but the buy buttons for all kindle books produced by Random House, Penguin, Hachette, and Macmillan have vanished from Amazon.

ETA: Also S&S and HarperCollins, it seems.

I'm doing my little O_O face right now. I also wonder if this is another example of Amazon Evil or just a glitch.

Mind you, as a company, they're not particularly prone to glitchiness.

Wow, I just went to Amazon to confirm, and it appears to be true. I looked up a Random House work, and the e-book page says "Not currently available."

Gee, I wonder how this is going to play out.

Mine's Harper and the Pre-order button's still there.

Ditto Toothpaste's Friday Society, which is Penguin.

The buy buttons are only missing from the Kindle versions. The paper versions are still available.

You can't preorder the Kindle versions of your books at the moment... pricing is not available.

Ah. I see what you mean. I checked Days of Blood and Starlight - which I bought this morning - and the kindle option is completely gone. It hasn't been removed from my kindle, however.

Maybe it's a software upgrade?

ETA: Nope, not software. I checked for Bait Dog, which is KDP and it's there - as is the authors other, non-KPD title (which is listed as sold by Amazon Digital Services)

Rick Riordan's novels (Hyperion) are still there, too.

This is bad for readers, for authors, for publishers...and I can't even see an upside for Amazon, so I fervently hope this is just a glitch.

If it isn't, I foresee Amazon catching a lot of customer backlash for it. eBook customers are used to instant gratification, and which means a lack of it is going to be very noticeable to them.

Plus, the Christmas season is coming up. Perfect timing for anyone looking to make a point with their wallet.

On Twitter, they're saying it's a glitch and will "be fixed."

*hopes*
Who is "they"--Amazon? (Also, have you found a hash tag other than #amazonageddon where they have better information? I haven't seen anything except speculation yet.)

This is probably Amazon throwing its weight around, trying to force the publishers who are fighting the Amazon-fueled bogus DOJ lawsuit to settle. They've used identical strong-arm tactics many times before to make publishers knuckle under to their anti-competitive, abusive demands.

So, guys, if you want to get my books published by Macmillan in electronic form -- they're all right there, available today, on the Nook from B&N, or on your iPad from Apple.

It was in an agent's Twitter stream. Let me go find it.

ETA: A tweet from Jenn Laughran.

Does anyone have an actual source for this Amazon news? Can't find anything current. Just the fact that ebooks from big 6 are in fact gone.

@sarahockler buttons gone, no explanation beyond "it's a glitch, will be fixed" ... Glitch that only affects Big6.

The buy buttons are back.

I suspect this was the equivalent of a guy named Guido walking into a shop and saying to the owner, "Nice store you've got here. Too bad if it burned down one night."

It looks like the buttons are back, so perhaps it was just one giant glitch.

Normally, when they have a glitch, they explain what went wrong in detail. We should see an explanation and an apology tomorrow at most.

Maybe they were just beta testing their nuclear option.

Maybe Amazon was testing a "kill" switch, which they want to have ready to cut off the big 6/5 in the future.
