I finally finished the first draft of my novel! It clocked in at 48,000 words. :hooray: I am happy, yet exhausted, and glad to be done with it so I can make it better.

Is it normal to feel drained after finishing the first draft of a project?

I feel like dancing!

Whoo-hoo! Well done! (And oh yeah, the first draft can feel like a slog.)

Nice Work! Actually I find the 2nd draft to be the hardest. So much slush...

I tend to feel energized when I finish a first draft, especially if I've just written the climax. One of the weirdest feelings was finishing the first draft of the final book of a series I had in my head for years. It was sort of bittersweet.

Of course, now I'm rewriting the series, so I didn't leave it after all.

Yay! Good for you!

I can't say I know what this feels like, because I must be the only person in the world who doesn't have such a thing as a 'first draft'. I edit as I go - write a bit, edit edit edit, polish, edit a bit more, write a bit, edit edit edit, polish.... go right back to the beginning and read over, edit.

Rinse and repeat.

By the time I've written from start to end of a novel, I'd say it's at least 7th draft ;)

Congrats, Celtic!

Yeah, it can be pretty draining. I know for me, I tend to get antsy towards the end of the draft, so I tend to push a little bit harder to get finished. I think that's part of why I feel a bit wrung out when I hit 'The End,' but I feel good, too.

Congrats! How long did it take to write the first draft?

I'm 10,000 words away from a first draft and I'm starting to feel antsy about finishing. I know that I only have about 4 more scenes to go. But unlike Jeffo, I want to abandon it and start editing.

@ AMtran: It took me about 7-8 months. I started it last summer.

That makes me feel better. With a full time job, I've come to the conclusion that I can't write more than one novel a year. So I am right on track with you.

Congratulations!

Sometimes writing the first draft can be tiring, but I find the second draft a lot more exhausting, I'm not too good at editing, that's probably my biggest weakness in terms of writing!
If you feel like the first draft is the worst bit then at least the hardest part is over for you!

Good work!

I also edit as I go, so it's not quite the same. I tend to feel drained by the time I hit the send button on queries.

Blessings,
